There seems to be some definitive progress at Duke University is combating herpes simplex 1 virus. That stuff that causes cold sores. The researchers at Duke seemed to have found the way the virus goes dormant and gets reawakened to cause an outbreak. What is more important is that clinical tests are showing that they can awaken the virus and then destroy it with anti-biotics at will.

Why is that important? Well, when the virus awakes naturally through the trigger that is used, not all of the virus awakens. Some stays dormant. So the drug therapy treatments kill only the virus that is awake. The dormant stuff stays lodged in nerve cells, pretty impervious to everything including your own immune system.

By using the synthetic trigger to awaken all of the virus, the researchers have been able to use acyclovir to irradicate the virus. Acyclovir is a common drug used to limit outbreaks of herpes of all kinds.

The people at Duke seem to think that they can do this with other strains of herpes simplex, they just need to do the research. This is a big deal because if this ends up working out, it will make a huge dent in herpes infections of all kinds. While there is the social stigma of being unclean that goes along with it, a greater issue is that herpes has been known and show to cause levels of cellular damage that can lead to cancer.

So yeah, pretty interesting stuff.

As the ad for genital herpes says on tv, 70% caught it when no symptoms were present.

So, what the hell were the other 30% thinking? Gosh, this is so good,
    let's share it?

Former girl friends are fine as long as the infections occurred AFTER any "extra curricular co-ed" activities occurred.
