new apartment, new speakers
I'm starting off in my new apartment (finally leaving the nest). I plan on picking up new speakers, a receiver and a television.
Room:
29x13. Speakers will be aimed in the 13' direction, approximately 1 foot off the walls, not near corners. Occasionally for parties they may be aimed the long way.
Speakers:
I listened briefly to some Lsi9s and I think I'm going to go with those. I'm going to do one more audition and then search for some July4th deals.
Stands:
Looking at the Steel Foundations from Sanus; I got the suggestion from the myriad of hits you get using the search feature here. 26~30", not sure yet. Have to measure my couch first. They're rated at holding 25lbs, but I figure if I fill them with lead shot (also a suggestion I've seen on here) they should be bottom heavy and stable enough.
Receiver:
To drive these I was looking at the NAD c720bee. I just want to know if this is a good amount of power and the impedance matches up well. The receiver is rated at 50W into 8 ohms but has listings for situations down to 2. I'm not sure if it would enjoy continuously driving a 4ohm load. I'm also not sure what the lowest impedance dip is on the Lsi9 response chart.
I've read that the Lsi9s have a bit of a threshold volume before they really come alive. Can this be accomplished with the NADs wattage and still have some headroom?
Lastly, if the impedance does dip, and it always seems to dip in a speaker in the mid-bass area, could this accentuate the mid-bass hump I've read about, with the extra boost of power due to low load?
TV:
thinking of a 40" LCD, any recommendations? (yes I realize this is the speaker section, so dont feel obligated to respond to this part)
Thanks,
C

Welcome to the club c , that NAD is a nice receiver but unfortunately you will need more wpc to tickle the lsi9's.I bought a harman kardon 3485 & it's rating for a 4 0hm load is 150wpc.And it sounded pretty darn good.I think it was a good match for 9's cause of not only the wpc but HK is known for having "warm" sounding receivers.
Recently added a separate amp rated at 300wpc into a 4 ohm load & that made all the difference in the world.Of course your neighbors might not like it to much:D:D:D -
Welcome to the club, c thur.
If you want to use 9's, up the power. Even at low volumes the drivers will be under more control, and it'll sound alot better. -
I went to Tweeter today to give a listen to the Rti A3. 8ohms, higher sensitivity and similar specs. Figured it may solve my underpowered problem. Out of curiosity I A/Bd with the LSi9s. It was night and day, can really here the price gap in the sound stage. Rti's also sounded a wee bit muffled where I would guess the drivers meet. But I wanted to know if I could get away with the Rtis. (didnt help their sweet spot was a bass null...)
I'd love to hold out for the Lsi9s, but I am not sure what to drive them with.
Recommendations on AVR and separates?
I'm doing mostly music and movies, I dont like TV audio through big speakers. Mixed to bright imo. Will be feeding from a DVD player or computer.
