Maytag and Sears

Maytag side by side, 3 years old, $2000, 41 days out of warranty: open the fridge door to get a beer and got a face full of freon! Call Sears. Buy a post incident protection agreement for $250. Sounded like a lot until the repair guy hands me an estimate for $1400!!! Says he will be back in four days with the part. I get a call tonight, the part will not be in until July 10th. All most 4 weeks without a fridge. Warm beer, Pop-tarts and beef-jerky for the next 10 days..LOL. I tried to get a loaner out of them. They put me on hold and then to a recording that informed me that i was not eligible for a replacement until the fourth separate issue repair. Oh well, what can you do?
And I mean calling all cars, blackhawk down, mushroom cloud, Three Mile Island, lock the door behind you kind of mad.

How much of GE is still made in the states? Do they even manufacture their own, or do they pimp them out?And I mean calling all cars, blackhawk down, mushroom cloud, Three Mile Island, lock the door behind you kind of mad. -

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm also sorry you got suckered by Sears. MOST(not all) refrigerated systems, come with a 4-5 year warranty. Depends on the manufacturer.
I'm talking about the system that actually holds the freon. You'd still have to pay for labor after 1 year, but that part would be covered.I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE! -
Allow me to clarify. The refrigerator was actually purchased at Lowes. Since I did not know who to have service it, I called Sears. It is turning out to be a good deal buying the protection plan. After about 10 calls last night, I finally got it out of them that they did not have the part, which I can understand. Just a major inconvenience. And I mean calling all cars, blackhawk down, mushroom cloud, Three Mile Island, lock the door behind you kind of mad.

Keep a $99 dorm/bar fridge in the basement for mishaps like that.
Gratuitous, egocentric comment: Our 'fridge was purchased new when we moved to Northern CA in early 1989... safe to say that it's living on borrowed time. -
I used to work in sears parts. (for about 25 years) Although you can have problems like waiting for a part its not so bad. Buy elsewhere and often times you find yourself with no source to even order a part. We had people everyday that we could not find them the needed part, even through other sources online. Believe it or not, most of us would spend time looking for alternate sources through the internet if we couldn't get it. Overall though, if sears can't get it you are not going to get it.

hmm... i was reading this late last night and thinking "gee, my beer doesnt seem particularly cold". off i go to turn the fridge down a bit. this morning, i have 65 degree milk, and everything perishable has. but the freezer is still freezin' and making ice. ever hear of some crap like that?
it is a KENMORE, and was purchased 4/05. 1 year warranty only. sears can come check it out on july 14  for $65 (probably to tell me i need a new fridge).
why is it when a man is down, something keeps kicking him?
sigh.

I agree with Max. I could always walk...yes I said WALK...into a sears service center and get whatever part I needed and go back home and install it myself 99% of the time. I also got a good deal of helpful answers from the folks on the desk. And when they couldn't answer the questions they would call a repair tech and ask them to get me the info. Only problem I have now is that the local service center has closed its doors to the public. The Kenmore fridge I have in the basement works like a charm and has for the last 10 or so years. I've only needed to replace the fan in the freezer section about 3 years ago. The Kenmore freezer I have has never faltered. I did finally give up my old Kenmore washer and dryer and replaced with a set of the new LG front load models. And the appliances in the new kitchen are LG. The LG was bought because I get a killer discount on the stuff and came with a total of 5 years warranty with the option of an extended add on in the future. Had it not been for the deals I got on the LG I would be right back with the Sears/Maytag/Kenmore products.
Take the $1400 you'd spend on the repairs and go get new. Just my .02 cents worth.

Call the service center and take the protection agreement. Since you purchased it at Sears you will get a better deal. I promise you the repair bill will be more than the $250 cost of the PA if there is anything major wrong with it. Plus, you are covered for one year.

You could get it fixed but they may have some 4th of July sales to make it worth getting a new one.
