Video cable conundrum

I'd been using a Sharp Aquos 32" LCD HDTV with my setup but decided I'd rather go bigger and badder (Pioneer Kuro, etc...) so I brought it back to Costco. I'm not back to a 27" Sony Wega SDTV (I think KS-FV120) which is very nice for a regular TV but I'm having issues eking out the best video performance.

Before, I'd connected my DVD player and cable box to the receiver via HDMI then fed a single HDMI cable to the TV. Now, I'm forced to use the component monitor out to the TV, but I've still got the HDMI connections going strong.

I suspect that this setup scheme is introducing noise by changing the signal too many times. I ordered some component cables and multichannel RCA cables yesterday and am going to hook it up anyway, but I was wondering if anyone else had experience with SDTV and HDMI and what not. The picture looks good but a little grainier (it is 480i) than I remember. I hooked up a composite cable for giggles and the colors obviously fell apart but motion and action were much smoother and more fluid, so perhaps that's evidence the analog connection will be superior.

IMO, anytime you add an extra link in the chain per se, you're going to lose some signal. I have two 27" Wega's. I'm using the component outputs from the source directly to the TV and have no issues at all for what it is.

HDTV, I'm running HDMI, source directly to TV and it's perfect.
    Yeah, HDMI is fun. :(

However, I've only got one component input so I have to use my AVR for switching. I'm going on the assumption that using only component ins will minimize processing.
