Another Camera Question

Ok fella's, I'm going to treat myself to an inexpensive P & S digital camera. I only want to spend 100-150 max.

I have a full blown old fashioned Chinon 35mm SLR with multiple lenses etc. that goes unused.

But I want something smaller but still easy to handle. It won't see too much action so I don't want to break the bank.

Thanks.:)

Cathy, check out this site. He does great reviews with lots of information. I have always found him to be right on the money. You are probably interested in the entry-level or compact cameras. I am partial to the Kodak Easy Share cameras or the Canon Powershots. Here is his "best" list.

Canon Powershot - great camera, very responsive and easy to use. Since getting this my bigger, more expensive camera hasn't been used once.

    Cathy,

The larger the lens, the more light it can gather. So generally I try and get the largest lens I can. This will be represented by the f number on the lens. The lower the number the better. For example, a lens with an f2.8 will gather more light than a lens with f3.5

Keeping that in mind and trying to go with a good quality lens, I would lean towards the
the FujiFine Pix S700 . It's $5 above your max but at amazon free shipping and usually no sales tax. I look the zoom feature which makes it more versatile outdoors.

I would also consider the Nikon P50 Coolpix This one is just under your max. It has a true wide angle (28mm) which works well for indoor shots and scenics. It has a bit of zoom for portraits.

I think you would get good use out either of these cameras. Both are fairly versatile, and the internal software of both are fairly easy to get used to.

    Hope that helps,
    Scott

    +1 for Canon Powershot.

I bought a Nikon Coolpix (5MP) about about 3 years ago and used it extensively for 2.5 years. It took great outdoor pictures, but virtually every indoor shot seemed "soft" to me. Not a bad camera, but now, as an owner of a Canon Powershot, I think that the Canon line takes superior pictures.

Here's a link to a Canon Powershot within your price range:

    http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-A580-Digital-Optical/dp/B0012YA4YK/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1214687645&sr=8-20

There are a few more Powershots in the $170-$180 range on Amazon, but I didn't inlcude them because of your price ceiling.

A read through this site will help you understand digital photography a bit more. Although geared towards a Dslr user, there is a lot in here that anybody using a P&S should know.

I would suggest dealing with B&H photo if you are going to use an online vendor, NOT One Call..lol....I spend anywhere from 5k to 10K a year at B&H and they have never ever let me down. One Call on the other hand, well I won't start any bashing but there are horror stories.
I do not know a whole lot about P&S cameras but you cannot go too wrong with a Nikon or a Canon. I know ...I know...but it is true.

I see dust! Typical of the way nikons take pics. They all seem to really show dust. I'm thinking thats a good thing for the camera, maybe bad for the person who should dust more. :)

I don't think you will have any buyers remorse with that camera. Should provide you with years of good service. I like the size of that Nikon, big enough to have a decent LCD screen and lens, small enough it will get carried to take some pictures of that amazing sunset you just happen upon.

Have fun with it! Glad the first pictures were of your rig.

You know she has a ton. I respect someone who knows how to control what they have. In the end there is comfort to saving away millions rather than blowing it on everything in site. On the other hand, that sony turntable could use a little upgrading. I say go on a little spree, blow a few thousand and make it sound better than the CD player. I'm a minimalist by nature but every now and then I go a little nuts. In the end it seems well worthwhile.

No EB I don't have a ton of money. But I do know how to save & I do know how to be careful since all it takes is one disaster to wipe everything I have worked so hard for to disappear!

I spend it when I want to & enjoy myself, but will never let myself get carried away to the point that I end up in trouble.

I like the fact that it took such great pictures inside the house. Many of the lower cost cameras do great outdoors with plenty of light but fall apart inside. If you look at the rack pic you will notice a very good image all the way from the brightest point to the darkest.
