Do you prefer a guitar, sax, piano, flute or violin solo

in your favorite rock (or other) songs?

Examples?

One of my all time favorites is the sax solo/accompaniment in Dire Strait's Your Latest Trick.

I'm sure I could find some other good ones like the violin licks from Kansas or the flute brilliance from Jethro Tull or a great guitar solo I heard the other day on the radio on a Journey song.

When I was a kid I played sax, so I sat in front of the brass section. I think that is what shaped my taste in music. I like brass, something about the mid tones that I find appealing. Its like the contrast between the rythem of drums and upright bass or even bass guitar and that punch of brass.

I try to listen to music that does not have guitar, I find it tiresome. It seems most guitar players think that if it is complicated or fast that it is good, I find it fatigueing and rather boring.

Right now I like jazz based hiphop and what I think some people refer to as mushroom jazz.

Little Feat's "Dixie Chicken", "America" by Kansas and that very song you mentioned by Dire Straights. It's not so much a particular instrument but many instruments [or sounds] that make up the music. Pink Floyd would be a good example.

I could go on for hours of the instruments and voices that rock my world but for now, I'll leave it at this. I love music that moves me. It doesn't have to be a guitar, sax, piano or flute. It just has to be well executed, well played music.

    ......Oh, well recorded too. :D

    +1 for Latest Trick sax.
Also the intro from Romeo and Juliet (live) from On The Night is brilliant.

Call me simple, but my all time favorite sax solo is from INXS - Never Tear Us Apart. I find it moving every time I hear it, no matter what kind of system I am listening to it on.

I think it depends on the song. I love "Your Latest Trick" by Dire Straits and this is THE demo track for me on any component, even more so than "Money For Nothing" from the same album. I suppose Mark Knopfler could've easily crafted a tasteful and classy guitar solo for the song, but the sax solo just fits the song so much better.

Same with Hall and Oates' "Maneater". Spandau Ballet's "True" not only featured a great sax solo, but also has one of the most memorable guitar riffs ever.

However, I do prefer a melodic electric guitar solo above all.

All shall bow down before Zamfir. Or so the prophecy goes...
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

For assessing how pleasing a system is to my ears, I like to use sections of Chris Thile playing mandolin solos, either with Nickel Creek or his latest albums with The How To Grow A Band and Punch Brothers.

IMO nothing better than hearing Steve Harris kick **** on the bass guitar, you just dont hear that many bassists have a lead role in a band.
