Polk 11T speakers

First post, i'll formally introduce myself later today if work slows down a little more.
Anyways, there's a guy local to me selling a pair of 11T, with this picture attached:
Now, every picture of 11T that i can manage to pull up online doesn't have that weird silver cone on the bottom driver (i believe it's passive, please correct me if i'm wrong.)
Does anyone know anything about this? Or should that be indication for me to step away? I'm not paying much for these if i get them ($70), so i'm just looking to find out if it's worth the risk (and gas) to drive 30 miles to pick them up.
Just looking for something to compliment my VS-25s (yep, i've got a pair) in the bedroom.
Thanks in advance!

Is that a silver cone, or is it the light reflecting off the larger dust cover of the lower passive? On my monitor, it almost looks like a camera flash reflection. Can you go look at them?Polk SDA SRS 2
Polk RTA 15tl
Polk Monitor 7C
Polk Lsi9
Infinity RS-II (modded)
Infinity RS-IIIa (modded)
Infinity RS 2.5 x 2
Magnepan 1.6QR (modded)

Looks like a camera flash. It would be well worth the money and the short drive to get them.

Looks like a reflection to me. That passive has a very flat and shiny surface. Well worth the $70 and gas.I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D

Thanks for the advice!

Most likely refection as the dust cap on the lower PR is larger and it is shiny.

$70? Go check them out.The world is full of answers, some are right and some are wrong. - Neil Young

That will be the best $ 70 you ever spent. The 11T is a really nice speaker and suprinsingly deep as well with nice tight bass. They are also more effecient than you might think. They used the same SL series tweeters in the SDA's or that era. You will enjoy them.

they look ok.. just need some good deep cleaning.. and with some luck.. all the drivers will be working. yeah go check em out for that price.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Got 'em.
Mainly dusty, they cleaned up pretty nice.
I'm still working on placement with them, but they're very crisp. Just seem to have a little less bass than the set of Infinitys that i temporarily replaced with them. Maybe once i get the placement right we'll be ok. For music, i do like them better, though. Just don't quite get the same "rumble" the Infinitys did. (I know, i need to suck it up and get a sub.)I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Take screwdriver, not a screw gun, and tighten all the screws on all the drivers making sure they are good and snug. You will feel when they are tight enough. If there are any air leaking around any drivers or terminal cup the bass will be less than optimal. Every pair of vintage Polks I have bought had loose screws, not unusual for being 20+ years old. Did you use windex and a lint free rag to clean the drivers?

Haven't actually cleaned the drivers yet, to be honest. I just cleaned the cabinets and covers as best i could for the moment, and started experimenting. I had a bit of a crisis with my car this weekend that needed the main attention.
I'll do the screwdriver thing tonite, i should probably do it on my VS-25s, too.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Most of the reason you aren't getting the same bass as the Infinities is because the Polk bass is cleaner and more natural; less bloated than the Infinity. Meaning it's closer to what the recording sounds like. I had RTA 11's and they put out more than ample bass if it's in the recording.
Clean 'em and enjoy

Thanks! Yeah, i do like them better for music, they just don't have the theater-style punch that the Infinitys seem to.
I'll let them adjust for awhile longer while i decide what to do. I may actually just run them in my bedroom for some 2-channel goodness.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

also (and this doesnt apply to MW woofers, i think), with some close-tolerance speakers, the basket can be slightly distorted by over tightening, which can cause the VC to rub (i.e. "blown", the blanket term that seems to describe damaged speakers).gear list:

This is all good advise, but I would check first to see if you have a problem before tightening the driver screws too much. Otherwise you wont know if your efforts were sucessful.
Push in gently on the PR. The MW drivers will be forced out by the air pressure and should stay out while you hold the PR. If they slowly return to rest, then you have a pressure leak. You can buy replacement gasket material at partsexpress.com.
It may pass that you find a small hole or tear in one of the surrounds. Of course, that will create the same problem. Cats love to attack the moving cones and they often damage the surrounds in this manner.

You leave those nasty SM-115's out of your system long enough and you'll appreciate the difference between the two. Infinity SM series has very little redeeming value in the world of accurate sound. A kid's (headbanger) speaker.

I know its an old post, but you also don't have foam surrounds to deal with eithe with the polks.
