HDMI Connection Speed(?)

As I was wandering through my local Circuit City, I started pricing Monster Cable products; specifically, HDMI cables. The highest-end HMDI cable was 200.00...due to the higher speeds of data the cable could handle from a Blue Ray Player to TV (or this was how it was explained to me by the salesperson).

Is this legit? Also, I am assumming Monster Cable products are probably the most expensive / marginal quality because of the name brand and marketing costs??

The "speed" also has something to do with being "1440p compliant" I believe. One of the many reasons I hate HDMI....the rules keep being changed for us as we go.

May I suggest Blue Jean Cable for your HDMI cable needs. Nice cable stated to handle 1080p inexpensive, you're not paying for the marketing cost.

No the claim is not legit. You will also see Monster claim that some of their HDMI cables are 120hz capable. There is no device that outputs 120hz, it's generated in the TV, after the cable.

I also use the cables linked above by Keiko, except 15 footers. They work fine, and are very well made. They are also not so thick and heavy (Monster) that they fall out of the jacks, like the higher end cables I have seen.

So far I have researched Blue Jeans and Monoprice's websites, vs. Monster and Audioquest.
There definitely are different business models at work here. Some of the Audioquest cables / speaker wire were priced through the roof...and the sound benefits of some of their products appeared questionable for the added cost. Anyway, thanks for the info. and be the ball Danny.

What you have is companies who make their own cables like AudioQuest, so this explains their cost. Compare to companies like BlueJean who make cables from other wire manufactures like Belden which make very nice cable, but may not top AudioQuest cable. Now you asked about HDMI which I use BlueJean's best and very happy with it, I use BlueJeans 12g Belden speaker wire in my walls for surround speakers. Where I use AudioQuest for my interconnects, and speaker wire fronts.

Another company is Signal Cable who also makes very fine cables. Just stay away from Monster just over priced cable to support their marketing nothing more. Dollar to Dollar any cable from the companies listed above would smoke a cable from Monster.

In my opinion, Monster cables are good quality, reliable and, compared to the "high end" cable companies (Kimber, Audioquest, Siltech, Ethereal, Transparent, Nordost, Sraightwire, Wireworld and so on) are only a bit overpriced. For good quality and the right price visit www.parts-express.com. They sell products from "unknown" companies that have little or no marketing overhead.

Hi speed HDMI cable? Unless you are planning to build your own 1440p rez TV and procuce your own DVDs in 1440p, the speed doesn't matter. What does matter is (a) strengh of cable shielding (usually resulting in 14 to 12 gauge overall cable size), (b) gold plating (anti-corrosion) connectors, (c) a tight fit to the source and target component inputs and (b) version 1.3 capable.
