This will almost be like adding a second sub - I'm expecting a 4 dB increase in output at anything above 30 Hz, and a huge (5-6 dB) increase in output below 30 Hz over the sealed design.

If that's the case, I will most likely not build a second 12" sub. No need to if I can improve just a bit the bass I have now. I ordered the two 3" ports from Parts Express today, hopefully, I'll receive them before next weekend.

    Peace Out~:D

Ron - you will be very impressed with this mod. The increase in overall output will be significant. But the really big kicker will be the increase in deep extension - you will be most impressed with this. Get ready for LOTR-FOTR all over again.

Between now and then, try and tame that nasty room mode - can you experiment with sub placement a bit before you finalize the Driftwood?

Too funny. I planned to do exactly that. First movie in after the porting, FotR.

I have been working on the room mode, but I cannot move the sub to another corner. I have a few tweaks that might help, but don't plan on putting too much effort into it until I get the ports in.

I did kill about 80% of the problem by placing two sheets of 5/8" drywall over the 1/2" behind the seating. That rear wall seemed to be the biggest problem.

If you can't tame it - get a BFD for $120 and that will do it for sure. People love that thing for taming nasty room modes.

FOTR has a ton of info at 20-25 Hz, extending into the subsonic range in many spots. The ring drop is strong to around 15 Hz on the waterfall charts. It pressurizes the room and there is a one-second subsonic room decay that just waffles your pants.

I'm going to do all I can before investing in a BFD. It's not a route I'd like to go, but I'll do it if all other options fail.

I'm dying to gut this thing and get the ports installed. The one thing I hate about on-line shopping...the wait!

The total for the 2 3" flared ports from parts express including shipping was $38. Not too bad. They are scheduled for delivery this Friday via UPS. Just in time for the weekend.

Rubbing palms together.........I'm thinking by Sat eve this thing will be up and running?

Might as well pull the top cap between now and Friday and make the cuts, pull out the poly fill (except for the wall lining) and generally get ready for reinstall.

    Pics Ron, gotta post pics!

Besides, missing your sub for a day or two will make the triumphant return of the Tempest Hurricane all the sweeter.

Saturday...SATURDAY! It will be ready by Thursday. If the ports arrive on Friday, you can only guess what I'll be doing Friday night.

    I will take some pics.

I'm picking up 'Signs' today and want to watch it first, then, the Tempest comes apart. Going by Home Depot today to pick up some new closed cell foam tape for the resealing.

Thanks again Doc. BTW, is any inner bracing needed for the ports?

Adire said in a reply email to leave all the poly-fill in, saying it won't hurt anything. I plan to remove all but the walls as that seems to be the general opinion.

I figured you would be drinking and maybe throwing down the jam Friday night like most of us, so Sat morning you would start the install on the vents. I shoulda known - you've got Driftwood fever! :-o

As for inner bracing on the ports - I have never seen that done - they are very light and stiff for their size, and once screwed to the top plate are very secure.

Agree - general consensus from the DIY boards is to line the walls of the tube with a good amount of glass or polyfill, but to leave the center area open. My SVS is that way - I would guess around 12" is open in the center - I can see the fiberglass on the side walls, but the shot from the driver to all three vents is wide open.
