A "LOUD POP" sound just started!

Any idea why this would start out of the blue? When I hit the mute button on the avr it first started, a loud pop from the left front speaker. It didn't pop when I un-muted the avr. Now if I turn the avr off before the amp (the wrong sequence) but I did it to see if it would also do it...& it did. When I turn the amp off first (the right sequence) it doesn't do it. I'm thinking it's got something to do with the avr. Any ideas?

    Loud in "sounds like it's going to screw something up" or loud like "this is annoying"?

    I've heard pops from lots of AVR's, including Yamaha, Pioneer, Marantz, and my B&K. With all the circuitary in these things it kind of seems to be the nature of the beast. Funny that it just started and is on one channel. Hope it's not something serious.

    I had something similar happen to me, start cleaning all switches and pots with DeoxIT, it may correct your problem.

    Pretty much "Loud" as it going to blow something. Kinda like a loud cap gun sound.

    Also I just noticed that it does it when I switch between devices (from cable input to CD input etc.) Man this has me on pins & needles.

    I'll try cleaning with DeoxIT as Face mentioned to see if that helps.

    Any other ideas as to what's happening here??

    In my experience (rather limited I'll admit) if the popping is occuring when you switch inputs then it could be a ground loop issue (my Yamaha htr did this until I put in a ground loop isolator on the cable feed) or a firmware/hardware issue. B&K AVR's had a firmware release that cured a lot of the popping when switching between input. On none of these was the popping at the level of being damaging, just annoying.

    If you're using it as a pre/pro, is there still output capacitors that can go bad?

    Sounds like one of your outputs in the avr is discharging and your amp is amplifying it. How high do you have the output when you shut down, or doesn't it matter? How old is the AVR?

    I'd get it checked out, but make sure you stick to the right sequence until you do. It might just pop something.

    my B&K has a subtle pop on turn-off (and maybe turn-on) but doesn't bother me at all.

    Yours sounds like a more serious issue, however. Good luck resolving it.

    The volumn level doesn't make a difference. The avr is a little over 4yrs old. It's just so strange that after all these yrs it just started doing it. Nothing's changed much except I added an Outlaw M2200 mono block for my center. I already completely took the Outlaw off line & it still did it, so I guess I can rule that out as the culprit. Other than that it's the same gear that I've had for awhile now.

    I'll definetely make sure my shut off procedure is done properly!!!

    I get that pop every time I turn my amp off as the caps discharge (regardless of order I turn things off in or what else is powered on or off). It is really odd that it just started for you though. No real ideas for you there...

    If it's not software, it's hardware. Try a re-flash of the eprom with the latest firmware via the RS232 port on the back. If that doesn't work, see if NAD has any idea which board to swap out.
