My next step building my 2 channel rig is the cdp, I can't use my ps3 because I will not have a tv with this setup and my pre dosen't have a digital input, so here are my questions...
In the other 2k cd thread someone posted the cambridge.. http://www.wildwestelectronics.net/cambridge-audio-740c-azur.html
they must have been reading my mind because I was wondering if such a product existed, it has digital inputs so you can use it as a dac as well as cd player, seems like genius to me.
Does anyone else make a product like this??
There are 2 cambridge models with this feature, the 740 and 840, there is a $400 price difference, judging by the specs do you think the price is worth it?
P.S. I want the digital ins for hooking up the pc, convenience of pandora while doing house work
Would I be better buying a $200 sony cdp and buying a seperate $800 dac?
How would the dac in one of the cdp compare to say the dac in a Lexicon dc-1 pre/pro, I am still thinking of trying to take back the Rotel pre I got in favor of something with digital input for simplicity sake.
Right now there seems to be many different aproaches to a final solution I am a little confused as to wich way to go, the Cambridge cdp seems like it could be the answer, but $1300 for a cdp is steep, but maybe in the long run cheaper, I just don't know.

I've been down the CDP/DAC road a few times...they all sounded great, but pale in comparison to what my Cambridge Audio 840C brings to the table.
The guys at CA really did their homework when they designed the 740C & the 840C. Because down the road if you decide to go with a computer or other music server...with the digital inputs available (2) you get to use their fabulous DAC's & that's a huge plus.
I never heard the 740C but if it's anything like it's big brother the 840C, I would highly recommend it.
It sounds like you would definetely be taking advantage of it's digital inputs, so why not kill two birds with one stone...a fabulous CD player plus it's dual DAC's for other options.
You could spend a whole lot more & get less, but why?? -

One question about your cdp, I've heard of cdp with adjustable gain that can be plugged directly into the power amp, Does your cambridge allow that? I think it has a headphone output with volume control so it seems possible, but I didn't see anything definate in the specs. -
Check out the CDP in the FM. That may be a good option.I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D

mule, the CA 840C doesn't have gain control or a headphone jack.
