If anybody's looking for a sweet video scaler at a really good price, I stumbled upon this on ebay. No affiliation.

What exactly does a video scaler do? I've seen them around, but couldn't really figure it out. (Call me dense)

I've seen the model below this one, the VP30, in action and it was pretty nice. Essentially, it takes the incoming video signals, analog and digital, and deinterlaces and uses a pretty nice scaler to upscale everything to any resolution you want. Better upscaling than any receiver and this is apparently the best value in video scalers. Pretty sweet, but mostly for those that are hardcore about their video and have some money to spend.

For that price, I could buy two Toshiba XA2 players with Reon upscaling chip.

I do realize that this upscaler may have slightly better specs, but come on, a grand???

That scaler use to sell for 3k. There is a big difference in this than say the XA2, the XA2 only scales from that source, and then your display will scale again to it's native resolution. This scaler will take place of the one in your display, giving you great results, and perfect for those with PJ's.

Exactly what I was going to say, Mike. A grand may be a lot for a non-SACD/DVD/amp/receiver component, but this is for those with 1080p projectors that want to have HD quality video from everything from satellite to Atari (well, maybe HD pixel blocks is pushing it). I would guarantee that anyone seeing this with a DVD from even a modest DVD player would be able to see a difference between it and an XA2. This is on the level of flagship upscaling DVD players, except for every source, not just DVD. Pretty nifty gadget, but not justifiable for everyone.

I definitely need one of these.

BTW, this is much better than one of the upscaling DVD players (I've seen it in action and it's GREAT!)
