In-Ceiling Speaker vs. Amp Wattage Question

Hello, I recently purchased an Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver that has 130 watts per channel. I realized that my in-ceiling speakers (TruAudio CP-8) are rated at 5-100 watts. What will happen if i use this receiver with these speakers? Will it blow or ruin the speakers? I didn't want to hook up the receiver until finding out! Thanks!

Really, is it that bad? I thought that the receiver is normally operating at lower wattage but maxes at 130 wpc? I have also read it's better to overpower than it is to underpower speakers. I am only asking because everybody on here is much smarter than I am and I don't want to ruin my speakers or receiver! Thanks.

Grumlenz, you are right it's better to overpower than under power speakers. Most likely your AVR will never output it's maximum rating to all channels any way. If you hear any distortion at loud volumes turn it down, that is when the damage is done.

If it makes you feel better I have been driving TC-60i rated for 125w with a 200w/channel amp for years with no issues. Don't worry and enjoy you new toy.

    +1.

I've been using a 275 wpc amp to power speakers rated for 85 watts for almost a year now, haven't melted a voice coil yet.

Just understand that if you do crank it, you need to listen for distortion, that's when your damaging you speakers. I try to stay under 75-80% of full power when I kick it up. That leaves headroom for transients. YMMV

A good point Antny,so often overlooked.Applies to every system. You crank it up and don't leave room for transients, then that big cannon shot hits, and you just blew a speaker, happens in a second.

personally, i would blow them up and then get some of the fine Polk Audio in ceiling speaks, they are great. in the mean time enjoy your system.

fyi I use a 200w channel amp with my Polk in ceiling speaks.
