My Morning Jacket: Evil Urges

It's hard to believe this band has been part of my life for over ten years. For chrissakes, Rolling Stone just named them "Breakthrough Band" of the year:D
Still... I wait for their new albums with a feverish gusto - salivating over whatever new direction they decide to take or rampant experimentation that's soon to follow.
The new album in no may disappoints.... me. However, I can see how some recent converts will be caught in headlights upon first listen. After all, isn't this the great Southern Rock Revival that's been championed by nearly every rag on the planet? Weren't we about to see the second coming of the Greatful Dead? If any of these thoughts have crossed your mind, you really haven't been paying attention to this band. The bong, perhaps?
One spin of Evil Urges takes a sledgehammer to any misconceptions. The opening track alone is the best song Prince hasn't written in fifteen years. Dance funk? check AM Radio James Taylor? check Good ol' rock? check A smidge of Doo Wop here. A bit of pop there. Gospel, etc. The results are almost dizzying.
The album's goal to shatter musical conventions is evident throughout. How would one even begin to describe their sound? Something simultaneously unique and nurturing of a veritable butt-load of musical styles. It's something Jim James does quite spectacularly and I suspect Evil Urges will have to sit on the shelves for well over a decade (or three) before it's truly appreciated.

I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Wow, they've been around awhile. Did they start local to you?
I heard them for the first time on SNL a week or so ago. Definitely caught my interest, which most newer music hasn't done lately.
Should I start with this album, or one of their older ones?Wristwatch--->Crisco -
I wonder if now people here will give them a listen. I'd suggest starting with the older stuff first. Even though that Rolling Stone comment is the biggest joke going. Been a fan for several years myself.
Also one of the best live bands I have ever seen (every time), and I have seen some very big names. -
Yup... local and part of the same scene, so there's a bit of pride festering here. I've even caught a few practices in Mom's garage. Good times.
Demi's right. Their live shows are legendary. Demi's also right... I would recommend picking up their earliest stuff so you can appreciate their evolution.I never had it like this where I grew up.
