A 9-digit number with 10 possibilities per digit would have 10^9 possibilities.

1,000,000,000, or 1 billion possibilities (minus a few reserved numbers; I don't think any SS numbers begin with 999 for example). (US Population is ~300 million right now).

SS number is unique...it's doesn't get recycled and there's some mistake with the lender or something serious...what are the odds of entering wrong numbers?

My brother and I lived the first eighteen years of my life (seventeen in his case) using each other socials mistakenly. I suppose that could have gotten really messy.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I actually have 2 SSN's assigned to me. I guess both my parents applied for a number for me when I was born in 1965 and somehow the applications must have crossed each other on a desk without the duplication being caught. I was not even aware of this until a couple of years ago when my Mom told me she had my card. In fact the statement that comes out every year or two that shows your projected benefits at retirement references both numbers although there is only one with earnings history.

SS # as I know are not that unique as the first set of 3 are region where the next set of 2 are city. But I could imagine that some areas have a series of region and or city numbers.

How do I know.... Once in an employee school / class the instructor ask if I lived in X one time as he seen my SS number and we where the same for the first 2 sets.

Well they've only been around since 1936. I have no idea how many people have been born / assigned SSNs since then. I can't seem to find anything about people being given numbers that were once allocated to anyone else.... but I suppose eventually it will have to happen. I'm betting we'll come up with a new system by then, especially with the speed technology is working.

Unless you have no credit, this wouldn't be the first time it would have come up. The name and SS# need to at least match, along with the last address. Now if the dead guy and you have the same name, you may very well actually be dead. Take the week off.

Now that I'm outta work, I can say that I deal with people's SS#s on a daily basis. Trust me, they don't recycle them. I've used the SS#s of several deceased people to complete an investigation. The dead are as important as the living . . . sometimes they are the best records we have.

I'm sure it's a mistake. The guy looking up your information or the person who input the information into the database the mortgage lender is using must have done so incorrectly. Errors in the database are 90% of the inaccuracies I deal with on a daily basis. The databases are not perfect. That's why we use over fifty and check them against each other.

The SSA makes lots of mistakes. Call them and get it fixed. In my line of work I have resurrected many dead people from the Social Security Administration deceased file.

Check with your local SS office.

Don't quote me and this is not legal advice but I believe if you already have a mortage and there's a problem later with the paper work, the problem resolution resides with the mortgage company or the title company. They both have insurance to cover themselves in the event that they didn't do their due diligence. Of course, they'll place all the blame on you.

I could be wrong though and it may depend on your local and state laws.

    To keep the math simple,

If 1/3 are grand parents, 1/3 are parents and 1/3 are children and the pop stayed at 300,000,000, then 100,000,000 grand parents would die and 100,000,000 children would be born each generation.

If each generation lasted 70 years (just thinking average) and it took 90 to 100 generations to run out of numbers (depending on how many of the #s they use) they have 630 to 700 years of numbers

Wow! that kind of puts into perspective your chances of actually winning the lottery, most of those have more # combinations than the ssn.

Is there any system as to how the numbers are assigned?

Yup, from the link Cathy posted earlier :
The nine-digit SSN is composed of three parts:

    * The first set of three digits is called the Area Number
    * The second set of two digits is called the Group Number
    * The final set of four digits is the Serial Number
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
