I haven't looked at the download world for a couple of years, and last I looked, it was mostly pop music.
There's a few bands that I like 1 or 2 songs of and don't want to buy their entire catalog just to get them, so...
Is there a download service that has a decent selection of Metal out there.
And NO, I'm not stealing music, thanks

Itunes has tons of bands especially if youre a fan of the 80's style (not hair bands) heavy metal. Check out bands like Within Temptation, Vanden Plas, Symphony X, Kamelot, Nightwish, Epica, Thoughtchamber and there are a ton others. Every CD Ive bought over the last 2 years has been from Itunes and one of these bands.

I did a Google search, ater I posted(DOH!), and found a website offering free downloads?
The problem I found was, metal is now fractured into a BUNCH of sub-genre's, and I don't know which band falls into which catagory?
Mac, I've never of any of those bands, but I'll check them out on Youtube.
The bands I'm interested in are Disturbed, Type O -, Tool, Godsmack, etc.
Anything along those lines. Not really into the Slayer, black or death metal genre's.
And I have NO clue what the rest of them are like?:D

I know I have (and Mac) have spoke of dream theater and recently for me Opeth.

But I was turned on to a band from a friend called Katatonia, and I have to say that I really enjoyed their most recent album called "The Great Cold Distance". Here are some you tube videos of them obieone. All three songs are from their new CD. The first song is a live version, but it is a fantastic live version. Damn Sweden is putting out some great rock bands!

The bands I listed are more progressive metal bands. Theyre the guys that play very heavy metal but theyre also top notch musicians.

Here are a couple clips that best demonstrate:

About my alltime favorite and my ringtone for the last 9 months:

    Within Temptation - The Howling

    Also:

    Kamelot -Rule the World

    Kamelot - Ghost Opera

Symphony X - Set the World On Fire

Hmmmm....I wonder if I can change the title of this thread to"Official Headbangers links"

Wow Great to see quite a few metal heads in here.

You got some great reccommendations up there.

Check out Therion. Amazing metal unlike any other.

If you're into black metal, Funeral Mist, are the masters of the art. No other black metal band can even come close. There's a few tracks on youtube.

For the Nightwish fans, what do you think of the new vocallist on the new album? Her voice suits some of the songs very nicely but for me, Tarja makes the band Nightwish. Her vocal style is one of the most unique I've ever heard. A sad tone that reveals beauty.
I picked up her first solo album after she left Nightwish and the musical style is very different. I really enjoy the cold atmosphere of the entire album.

    MacLeod,
Is the Kamelot 'rule the world' you mentioned, a new release? Ghost Opera haven't been out that long. If it is, I'm going out to get it asap. I've seen them 3 times. Epica opened for one of the show and for the other, Simone from Epica came out to sing 'The Haunting' with Khan. They always put out an amazing show.

I am a big fan of Nightwish, and while the new singer is good, I don't think anyone could replace Tarja. She was AMAZING!

That's awesome man. The first track on 'Dark Passion's Play' is probably my second favorite Nightwish song. I think 'Ghost Love Score' from Once is my fav. Did you get Tarja's new solo album?

Have you heard of Leaves' Eyes? She's just as good as Nightwish and Epica.... http://youtube.com/watch?v=VpcRWA_-3jw&feature=related

Maybe I've just been away for too long, but what make them any more sick than bands like Cannibal Corpse or Obituary?

Opeth at their heaviest is about the most I can take. Funeral Mist....wow - waaaaaayyy too much for me. I don't really find much musical about it I guess, but different strokes for different folks. Jeezus that stuff makes Opeth's heaviest riffs feel like Enya....

Epica opened for one of the show and for the other, Simone from Epica came out to sing 'The Haunting' with Khan. They always put out an amazing show.

I think Annette is ok but she sounds no different than your typical Jessican Simpson/Christina Aguilerra types. Some of the songs are a little out of her range as well. Tarja not only had a unique voice but also a very powerful sound that brought a lot of chunk and authority to the music. The music is still top notch and I did enjoy Dark Passion Play but 2 things have really ruined Nightwish for me.

1- The rest of the band got their dresses over their heads because Tarja was 10 times more popular than them and responsible for their popularity. Their egos got hurt so they fired her.

2- Firing the greatest female lead singer in history wasnt enough, they had to do it in an open letter in an attempt to humiliate her THEN had the balls to write a song trashing her on the new album! I love their music but they are the biggest **** in music history!

I bought Tarja's new solo CD and while it is good its not as good as the Nightwish stuff. The first 7 songs are outstanding but 11, Oasis which is not heavy at all, is my favorite on the track. Reminds me of something youd hear as a soundtrack of a movie about ancient warriors with the camera doing a flyover of a battlefield with bodies strewn all over and the lone hero standing in the foreground. Here is a Youtube clip of the song (no video). This is one of my favorite songs to turn the lights off, sip on some vodka under the ceiling fan and put on repeat for hours!

I will always buy her stuff cause frankly I worship her!!!! How could you not?!?!

    2u9u1k2.jpg

As for the black metal - I cant get into that. Im too old school I suppose and prefer some musicianship in my music and to be able to somewhat understand the lyrics. Thats why I have got so much into progressive and symphonic metal. Just my cup of tea.

The Kamelot track is off the Ghost Opera CD. Its the first track.

    JDogg,
Yeah, I listen to Dimmu. I effin love that first track on their new album. Hellhammer is insane on drums. But I guess I'm old school when it comes to Dimmu. I prefer their older albums like 'Enthroned Darkness Triumphant'. The re-recording of 'Stormblast' is phenominal. Recorded in Studio Abyss and HDCD encoded.

    MacLeod,
My bad, I listen to so much metal, sometimes I forget track names and remember them by numbers.

Oh crap! I had no idea that's what happened with NIghtwish. I thought Tarja left because she wanted to persue a solo career. Now everything makes sense. I bet I know which song was about Tarja. Did the chorus go like this? 'Did you ever read what I wrote you? did you ever hear what I told you?, did you ever listen to what we played, did you ever learn what the words said?' What a bunch of a**holes.

Maybe Thomas would be more popular and not hate Tarja that much if he smiled more on stage and stop that stupid, mysterious and evil persona he always does. But a keyboardist can only have so much popularity lol. I don't like Marco (I think that's his name). Their new basist. He's only been with the band for the past 3 albums and has always been acting like he's been with them from the start. Too cocky. Like you said, they are the biggest **** in metal.

Dude, you have to check out Therion since you're really into symphonic metal. They are currently my fav band. Here are some samples....
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=JwBxEzO0TO0
The live version is just as good as the cd. Pure atmosphere.
    Here's another great one...

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=VKDhhoMoh2k&feature=related
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=IPEMlEy04HY&feature=related

They started off as a death metal band but their past 6 or so releases has been symphonic metal with full blown orchestras and choir.

Love the Tarja picture. She's so angelic.
