Lsi9 tweaking the ebony finish?

Could one put on an over coat to the ebony wood panels? Such as a wipe on poly or sprayed on laquer? Or would this lead to dye problems? Also are the wood sides even removable? Polk mods-help?

    They are removable. There are threads somewhere on this forum.

    I think they are just stuck on with strong double-sided tape / adhesive.

    Haven't tried dying or painting other than using some black touch-up paint on a dinged corner.
