Since a few others posted some crime related stories I will join in...I will try to make it brief...
A friend got called to jury duty a couple weeks ago, and he gets selected for an attempted murder case.
College party, a 20 year old kid drinks a six pack of beer that isn't his.
Party breaks up and the owners of the beer realize their beer is gone.
Owner of beer goes home, gets a kitchen knife, finds drunk kid, argues, stabs kid in front of 10 to 15 people and walks back to his dorm.
The kids lower intestine is outside of his body and leaking waste. The surrounding kids call 911 and he is life flighted to hospital and barely survives.
Now keep in mind that the above is known to be fact because of all the witnesses.
Prosocution drops charges to assalt with a deadly weapon because they figure its a slam dunk case that they can't lose that way. (wich I think is absurd right there, going home to get knife shows premeditation=attemted murder)
Jurys first hurdle, (not being racist, just stating facts) the two black women think it was self defense so the defendant is innocent (meanwhile he is the one with the knife and sought out the victem) a day and a half to convince them defendant is guilty.
jurys second hurdle, there is a woman that dosen't belive a knife is a deadly weapon so the defendant can't be guilty of "assault with a deadly weapon" When my friend told me this I freaked out! It took the jury 5 hours to convince this woman that a knife is a deadly weapon! F'ing retarded!
They finally convicted him, but it was close, and given the circumstance that is sad.

I've never been called for jury duty (somehow! knock on wood) but I think dealing with the moronic people like the ones you mention would be the worst part.
I can't even imagine trying to rationally explain to someone that going home, getting a knife, and stabbing someone in the stomach is not self-defense for "stealing" a six-pack at a party. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Heh heh, I was on a civil trial once and we had to decide fault and damages. This lady was claiming that the car wreck ruined her life and all this "oh, the embarressment, oh I gained weight because of it, blah, blah, blah" and there were two women on the jury that bought all of this crap even though no experts were brought forward from their side. It was sooo freaking retarded...
I was just glad that the civil trial I was on needed only 10 of 12 to go one way or another. There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin -
Try testifying, it's even worse than jury duty."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

As a witness or as an expert?
I imagine a witness would suck because they would try to destroy your credibility. As an expert it would be difficult because as an "expert" you're credibility is already established and you'll probably have to deal with BS from another supposed "expert" from the opposing side.
Me, been to Jury Duty 11 times in 12 years. Have yet to serve on a jury though. It helps when you know a bunch of lawyers in the area. I've gotten on stand and the first words I hear are "Ah, crap! Not you!" Then the judge says I'm dismissed. Although one lawyer I know says he would love to have me on a jury because I'm "not a bumbling idiot like 75% of the people that actually serve on jury duty." Then he usually asks why I'm actually there because the smarter people usually weasel out of it in one way or another. I just decided to stop fighting it. I get called yearly, someone in the jury selection office must have a hard on for me.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

I was in for jury selection just last week on an aggravated sexual assault chage. Thank God I did not get selected. From the Prosecutor's questioning it sounded as if it was a simple he said/she said case with very little physical evidence.
The guy was 25 years old. Sentencing for the charge ranges from 5-99 years if guilty. -
I just called the county office and asked for my jury duty to be reset or extended so now I go back in the hat for another 6 months.

The jury system is a joke. Why would either party to a trial want the outcome decided by 12 people too stupid to figure out how to get out of jury duty?"Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

I was selected for jury duty once. I got the notification 1 day AFTER I was to report.
At the time I was in the middle of the Indian ocean, heading for Somalia:o
When I opened that letter I freaked! I took it the command legal officer and asked if I was in trouble. "I'll take care of it" Whew:DI refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE! -

There were a few older retired people in the jury pool that seemed level headed to me and honestly didn't mind serving on a jury. I'm sure they would be good jurors.
It was my first time and it was definitely an experience. Took almost all day for them to get down to 12 from the 70 or so that showed up. It wouldn't have taken so long except for a few babbling folks. One woman was so desperate not to get the on jury she blatantly lied and made her self look like an **** on EVERY single question that was asked. I understand the desire not to be on the jury, but jeez she was annoying as hell. She wasted a good hour or two babbling nonsense, when just a few choice words would have ensured she wouldn't be picked. She thought she was sooo funny and smart. I wanted to punch her in the face for wasting my time. -
I served on a criminal jury....ONCE...and vowed never to do it again. What a joke. I would not have entrusted most of the jurors I served with to make a decision on some of the most insignificant aspects of my life (like changing my oil, mowing my lawn, etc..) much less my guilt or innocence. I was amazed at their lack of any kind of basic knowledge of civics or common sense. If I was truly innocent, I believe I would rather have a bench trial with a judge deciding rather than a jury trial. Now if I was guilty...maybe a jury trial would be OK...cause the idiots might just find me not guilty (ie: O.J.)."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

you ain't kidding...I had to testify against a WOMAN who was stalking my friend a long time ago. Because I am 6'3 and 250lbs, her lawyer was wondering why I would be afraid of this girl...
