Well Tony, I could come back with an equally smart **** remark, but I won't in the interest of peace on Club Polk, which we haven't had much of lately.

Anyway, I post more about subs because I know more about them than other aspects of audio/HT. You will note if you stick around long enough that I avoid like the plague posting about things I know nothing about. There is nothing worse than an uninformed troll who tries to come off as a psuedo expert in every aspect of his hobby and at the same time steers newbies in the wrong direction with bad advice.

When I decided to upgrade my sub, I did a great deal of research into subwoofer design theory, and I lurked on the best subwoofer DIY boards for months, soaking up information. I also critically evaluated several brands of commercial subs and read dozens of independent and enthusaist reviews before I settled on SVS.

Of all my upgrades, buying a world class sub was by far the best return on investment. Once you have experienced a subwoofer with very low THD, a flat FR with no mid bass bloat, good transient response, extension to below 20 Hz with no roll-off, and excellent dynamic stability with no power compression or port compression - you will never be satisfied with anything less. There is an entire world of bass from 30-15 Hz that most of us are missing completely on HT DVD playback - it is truly another dimension in sound.

So before you talk about my hard on, give a brother a break and get your demo on with a Velo HGS 18, HSU VTF-3, HSU TN1220HO, SVS 20-39PCi, 20-39PC+, or Ultra and get back to me afterwards. If you're anything like the rest of us, you'll have your PSW404 in the Flea Market and you'll eat frozen peas for a 6 months just to buy a new sub.

Ed......at no point did I intend on being negative or disrespectful. If I came across that way, then I do honestly appologize. I hold your comments/knowledge to a high respect and use it as food for thought as I wade through the ocean of home audio/theater.

As for your comment about "an equally ....remark," feel free to comment on it. If you think I've said something out of line or inaccurately, then please correct me. How else am I going to learn? (This goes for everyone in the forum!) I take no pride in being wrong and with my everyday job, pride takes a back seat to getting the job done right. I know my technical/knowledgeable limits and feel like I haven't given anyone here any bad or useless information.

As for the 404, I'm not claiming that I have the greatest rig out there. It works for me considering the space and budget I have to work with.

All in all....I'm still feelin' the love :cool:

Tony, the only thing I took offense to was what I quoted above.

The "rolled up eyes" icon either means the user doesn't think too highly of the target in general, or doesn't think too highly of what he wrote in particular, or both.

The implication of your post was "I don't see what all the fuss is about with Dr. Spec and his hard-on for bass - what's the big deal anyway?" And my response in a nutshell was don't knock it until you've tried it.

All I meant about the 404 is that the 404 doesn't qualify as "trying it" in this context. Except for the now defunct and missed PSW1200, Polk doesn't make a sub that really meets the criteria I outlined above. For the record, I owned twin PSW350s and I liked the sound a lot and I honestly thought I was getting nearly all of the bass on DVDs, but I never knew what I was missing below 35 Hz until I got my demo on.

BTW, I NEVER knock anyone else's gear on the forum. We all have budget, space and time constraints, and we all started somewhere. There are many systems on this forum and elsewhere that put mine to shame. Hell, some guy over at HTF has a $93,000 system!

Otherwise I think you've been a great, enthusiastic addition to the forum, I hope you stick around, and I haven't seen anything in any of your posts that would lead me to believe you've given bad or useless information and I certainly didn't mean to imply that - I was referring to myself giving (for example) information on DVD-A sampling rates or the nuances between SDA tweeters and crossovers or wall mounted sound absorbers, or other somesuch that I know nothing about.

Well, we've beaten this dead cow, I think. Still feelin' the love.

i would have went with the Tumult but it was a little out of my price range to get a amp for it. that is y i went with the avi5 it moddles out to be a great sub.

i'm not that much into bass. for home theater or music. Yeah my 350 doesn't reach as low as other more expensive subs on the market. or DIY ones. I have a friend who has one of those expensive Velo 18" subs. It's an incredible sub not doubt. BUt to me it's to much, he has a big room and stuff. But the sub never lets you rest. it knocks you around the room with bass even when watching just TV. he has it calibrated with his SPL meter and stuff.. but it just never lets up. I know others would kill to have a sub with that much bass. I can't handle it for that long.

A properly calibrated sub should only knock you around at really high playback and only then when the source material calls for it.

I can't speak for anyone else, but my sub is completely unobtrusive to the point of being unnoticeable until the source calls for it.

It sounds like he might have a room induced peak, or is running the sub overly hot despite his apparent use of the SPL meter for calibration. That's not really normal.

Dr. yes that could be the case. It is an incredible sub. And i would like to have one that good some day. His is placed in the corner of the room.. firing toward the listener off to the right.. about 2 ft from the couch.

Ganzo, how low will you go is the question here.

I bet if you did $250 shipped, and make a NEW post, this thing will move. Hell, thats what a 202 costs retail, WITHOUT tax, and this is twice the sub.
