Ohm problem with old speakers

This is my first post. I need help with my Polk SDA-2 speakers that I purchased in 1985. Until now, I have been using an Onkyo TX-85 to drive these 2 speakers and they have worked great for 23 years.

I decided to upgrade to a 7.1 system using wires I installed when I built my house in 1986. I purchased an Onkyo TX-SR605 and Polk RM6880 5.1 speaker system. The speakers haven't arrived yet, but I connected the TX-SR605 to the SDA-2 speakers to see how it sounded.

It sounded great but after a period of time evidently the amp protection circuit activated. The Polk SDA-2 speakers are rated at 4 ohms. After a cool down period of time, the amp started working again.

Is there anything I can do to make the system work that I have purchased, or do I have to upgrade to a stronger amp? If I have to upgrade, what should I buy? I would like to stay with Onkyo because for 23 years I have been pleased with the performance.

You'll have to return the 605 and get a model with pre-amp outs(705 and above I believe), and buy a external amp for the SDA's.

Yup, they are drawing too much and your receiver doesn't like it. (Most don't like SDAs) Pre-out the receiver to a separate amp, or just get a multi channel amp and preamp combo.

    Face And zingo,

Thanks for the quick reply!! I am thinking about the Polk SR805. Do either of you have a suggestion for a seperate amp for the SDA-2 speakers?

    Thanks again for the help

Check out the amplifier section of Audiogon and look for something in your budget.
