What is the difference between a pre-amp and a line stage, and what are the different apllications if any?

My understanding is a line stage is a preamp without a phono stage.

At the risk of showing my ignorance once again, I think the definition of a line stage pre is one that simply increases gain in a signal with no added circuits to modify the signal. The standard pre has tone controls etc.
