Are the 17 yr cicadas driving you crazy? I think they sound like a old 1950s sifi flying saucer! Most people in my area hate them.

Wow... that brings back some memories of the few years I spent in the backwoods of Kentucky. Seventeen years ago to be precise. That sound is indescribable. And the shells all over the place. Eesh...
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

To see when they will arrive in a tree near you look here:

    http://insects.ummz.lsa.umich.edu/fauna/michigan_cicadas/Periodical/Index.html

Got hit in the chest by one on a bike doing about 65 mph. Thought I'd been shot. Left a bruise for weeks.

Sho 'nuff. "Pert nert yummers" is what Pappy'd say. And then he would throw a bottle of Thunderbird at my head. Sometimes he would miss and hit my crib.

With Steve on this one. When we went to Iowa last summer we could not get enough of the lightning bugs. We forgot how much we missed them.

VA in '82? The frickin' road was covered with them. You could hear the crunching of the bodies just driving down the road. Skip, I could only imagine "ouch!". Looks like they'll be down my way soon, although I have heard them just a little bit this year but nothing like VA.

I'll trade ya them bugs for whateverthefuckis behind my house. It nests there every April-June, and makes the most F'd up sound I ever heard. It might be a whooping crane?

Time to practice that golf swing with a few balls vs. nest behind house.

I'd take a gun to it, but it's just off my property:mad:
Actually, this year it hasn't been too bad. I can hear it if I listen real hard, but the past 2 years were annoying as hell. It's frustrating because the sound it makes, is SO bizarre! I can't even replicate it.

Maybe Sandhill cranes. They make a heck of a racket. But they are protected.
