These were SOLD to a local buyer. I don't have the bread yet, so I guess it's still pending.

I'm not a member of the Carver Forum so these are going up for sale here. These speakers belong to my good friend Dipole Dan who has retired and is moving to Annapolis to be closer to the strip joint where Strong Bad takes those great pictures.

Anyways, Dipole Dan is the original owner of these beauties, they are oak colored without any imperfections on the wood or the front cloth. The rear cloth behind the speaker has some cat claw damage, but nothing that can't be fixed for a few bucks or ignored. The claw marks cannot be seen from the front. These speakers come with 2 - 25 lb bags of lead (the real stuff). Dan has the original foam packing material, but only one orginal box.

Dan is willing to deliver these speakers to the Washington, DC, Baltimore, Cleveland of mid PA. These are also available for pickup in Pittsburgh. These speakers sound fantastic and are in 8/10 rated for age and the bad kitty scratches on the rear. I found one small mark on the ribbon about 1/4" in size.(see last pick) This does not affect the ribbon performance. Price $1,250 delivered or picked up.
Take a peak:D

Oak Plats are very rare. Someone jump on these, you won't be sorry if you have the amp to drive 'em.

I don't suppose he'd be up for a trade for some Maggie 3.3R's eh?

It's about time to try something different...

If I didn't have the Mags I would go for it but 2 sets of huge speakers is enough for now.

I had the black versions. Sound was truly amazing (no pun intended). These need powerful amp to run as they are power hungry.

I will own a pair of these some day; the AL-III's left me wanting more.....
Now it is not the right time. No room for them, no money, no appropriate amp. They do look in great shape.

Someone will make a great deal here.

I'm another one who's always wanted to try these. I have the amp, the room, but no money at the moment.

Best of luck on your sale.

Between the ALIII's and the Plat's side by side? I've heard them both, one right after the other and back. These speakers come out smelling like a rose. These are what I would consider to be one of the few "true" full range speakers.

In the condition that they are in, they won't be here long.

everyone here has commented on how they sound, and for good reason, so I won't beleaguer the point.

I will say what others havn't, and thats the fact that no other speakers cpmmand a physical presence like these do. Jaws will drop, often and HARD when people lay eyes on these things. I own a pair of these. not using them at the moment, but will not sell em. there's a good reason for it too.

these speakers need to be experienced by any self respecting audio enthusiast, plain and simple. It's a must own/experience in depth type of speaker.

Well stated Lou! They sound like nothing most audiophiles have experienced. With the big amp, it's not how loud they sound that is so impressive, it's the image, detail and depth of the soundstage. Great speakers. I heard these once a week for the past three or so years. They never got old.

So basically you're recommeding this amplifier for the carver amazings?
Is this amp a common ground amplifier? How well will this amplifier drive the 1.2 tl?

Funny story Ted. Dan had this system setup as a 7.3 HT. The Amazings in the fronts, small Maggie panels( 36" X 12' wide) mounted on hinges on rear and the side walls. The hinge allowed the speakers to be positioned to provide the best dipole ambiance.

Three sub woofers, the front was an 18" Velodyne with a 1000 watt outboard amp, a 12 " Outlaw sub in the rear and a small Carver Sunfire on the side. All the subs were controlled by a Velodyne SMS-1. Bass response was flat as a pancake.

We had a guy come over who wanted to buy the 18" Velodyne sub for his train museum. He wanted to show movies of old steam engines. So we put the DVD in the player and turned on the system. The "whoosh!, whoosh!, whoosh! of the steam engine piston hit our chests so hard, the museum guy had to leave the room and go lie down in his van. He was afraid the bass tones that were going right through his chest were going to stop his heart. I went out to the van to see if he was okay. He said "I'm fine, I'll be back inside in a few moments with cash. Can you guys carry the sub and load it into my van (all 200 lbs of it.)

The 8 12" woofers in the Plats are all the bass I'll ever need. Never felt the need for a sub. Plats have the truest bass I've ever heard come from a speaker. Clear and crisp, yet you feel each bass note as well as hear it. I do chuckle everytime someone sees Plats for the first time. It's always "Dang, those are speakers?" They do become the focal point of the room they are in.

Right out of the box when new, something wasn't right in my mind. The things associated with deep bass were not there (cabinet vibrations and colorations), and I thought they were a little light in that department. Then I put on something that had a prominent low end, and it quickly turned to "Whoa, well these aren't bass shy at all!"

I like them and think I'm keeping them!

You said that twenty years ago... You ain't getting fuzzy are ya? You know, repeating yourself and whatnot:D

I knew when I heard George's I knew that I had found my Nirvana. I told him I'd have a set one day, and I do. And I WILL be keeping them for the forseeable future.

You won't find anything to touch the performance of these for 10 times the price. Even if they are almost twenty years old.

I cannot believe that these have not sold. Somebody buy them before I do...
