I came home today and turned on the system. I was going to play some xbox but when i turned it on the audio was scrambled and then it cut out altogether. So making sure it wasnt my xbox (which is going optical to the denon) i went and turned on the tv which is run to the receiver through digital coax. Same thing is happening there. The audio is almost like its scrambled. It sounds like a robot and then it goes out and comes back. If i turn my xbox on and change the input back to optical it will try to decode dolby digital but if you are familiar with the 3800 series you know it has a red light that shows its decoding dts or DD. well the red light is flickering on and off like its getting on and off signals. I know its not my optical cable because ive tried another and i know its not my xbox because its doing it for when im watching TV also. Its like the digital decoder is all screwed up. Any ideas guys?

Go to your manual, do a full reset as per the directions that are buried in there somewhere. If that doesn't work, I'd say something is wrong with the DSP board. My 4802 had a problem similar to this, but after warming up for 5 minutes, it went away. If it is a bad DSP board, be prepared for an expensive repair. Probably more than its worth.

Try something else: See how it sounds if you use the external 5.1/7.1 inputs (like for SACD) and see how it sounds. That is usually the least processed input and sometimes doesn't even go through the DSP.

    Adam,
Try the test mode in the attached file and see what it says. Might help you diagnose, or at least give you something to tell Denon and/or the service shop.
