BOSTON - A cancerous brain tumor caused the seizure Sen. Edward M. Kennedy suffered over the weekend, doctors said Tuesday in a grim diagnosis for one of American politics' most enduring figures.

"He remains in good spirits and full of energy," the doctors for the 76-year-old Massachusetts Democrat said in a statement.

They said tests conducted after the seizure showed a tumor in Kennedy's left parietal lobe. Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma, they said.

His treatment will be decided after more tests but the usual course includes combinations of radiation and chemotherapy.

Kennedy has been hospitalized in Boston since Saturday, when he was airlifted from Cape Cod after a seizure at his home.

Not a fan of his politics, but bad times none-the-less and something that no one should have to deal with. Had a family friend with a brain tumor and they are bad news all around; prayers for him and his family.

The C word is a horrible way to go. That type of cancer is the worst. You brain control and functions just start degrading one by one. SAD No madder how much a person is disliked this is a horrible way to go. All I can do is send prayers.

I would not wish a brain tumor on anyone. My mother began showing strange symptoms Mothers Day weekend 2006. In June of that year she went to the hospital where they discovered a tumor and performed surgery the next day, that was 6/23/06. It was a glioblastoma- the worst kind. She died one year to the day 6/23/07 after her surgery. It was horrible seeing the changes in her mentally, emotionally, and physically over that year. She fought it to the end but finally slipped into a coma and left us.

simm- I lost my mother the exact same way. She was diagnosed when I was 14 with a glioblastoma multiforme. Went through 2 surgeries and many clinical trials over two years until it was finally too much and they couldn't operate again. She passed away Oct 8th, 2002; 2 years and 6 months after her diagnosis. Thankfully, she never had problems with seizures, just slowly became more and more unresponsive until it was over.

I agree... something I would never wish on my worst enemy.
    Ludicrous gibs!

As much as I hate his politics, this just plain sucks. A guy that served this country so long should not have to endure a disease like this. My grandfather died of a tumor like this . . . I would never wish it on anyone. Sad day. . .

I am not a fan of his politics or his immoral values, but I wish him the best for a speedy recovery. My prayers go out to him and his family.

I don't wish that on anyone and have great empathy for his family but he lived a lot longer than Mary Jo Kopechne.

As mirrored by most in the thread, I feel for the poor Kennedy family who has been through so much and wouldnt wish this disease on anybody.....but this guy has been a **** stain on the bottom of the Kennedy shoe from day one.

Goes to show that every family , no matter how affluent or augmenting to the health and well being of our society.....has a scumbag somewhere on the family tree.
