I've become interested recently in world history, both ancient and modern. I think I've soaked up as much as I'm going to for now on World War II, so I'd like to move on to a more global perspective.

I'm basically looking for something that starts with the creation of civilization and brings me into the 20th Century. I'm not looking for culture specific at the moment, just basically an 'Overview of Mankind"...

Any good reccomendations for books or online resources?

The Historical Atlas of World Mythology by Joseph Campbell is a fascinating read.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

A buddy of mine (geologist) was telling me of a film a professor had. The premise of the film is that it was recorded by a superior alien intelligence and was basically a recorded history of man and the earth from its beginning. It was a week long/24 hrs a day (it was scaled down from the geological timeframe as we know). I think the last 30 seconds of that week long film showed mankind's presence and influence in the world. Fascinating concept.

The discovery channel had something similar, I believe it was the history of the world.

Jean Jacques Rousseau - The Social Contract is a good read as well as Adam Smith - The Wealth of Nations

I can highly recommend the following:

Diamond, Jared (1999) Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies. WW Norton & Company.

The discussion is broad-based and engaging (The title of the Preface is "Why World History is Like an Onion", just to give you an idea). This volume covers the development of world civilizations, political structures, domestication of animals and agriculture, science and technology, etc. I think you might find it interesting.
