Just a rant

So this is just what I have been thinking about this evening. I got a call from best buy stating that I have orientation tomorrow, but I never really wanted to work another retail job... so i just got all worked up and just freaked out.

So now I do not know what I want to do with myself... i mean i don't mind working retail but I just have such a strong hate for it and i never want to do it. but i can put on a face at work and be a different person. I'd really like to utilize my cubicle experience and work in a clerical environment, but i can't seem to find a job doing that.

Ideally i'd just work early in the mornings stocking somewhere... there is a job at menards doing this and I called to tell them I was very very interested... hopefully they call me back.

I'm just tired of having to dread going to work... i understand that it is part of life, but I'm so temperamental and I have a short fuse... so it is hard for me to go into a position like this with an open mind.

if anyone can provide some information or words of advice i would greatly appreciate it. i understand there are far worse things than this... but i just feel empty inside.

Nothing more frustrating than not enjoying your job. I would hook up with an employment agency (or something like that) and let them assess your skills in relation to the type of work you are looking for. They may be able to give you some help and tips on what you have to do in order to be in the job you want. They may find you the job or perhaps tell you what additional training you need, if you need any. Good luck.

Egh, youre still young, grin and bear it. Nothing's worse than waking up to a job you don't like, but thats a part of being young. Just do your best to make the most out of your situation and know that in the future, it will get better.

I'm sorry but someone has to say it...try growing up! Working sucks plain & simple, but unless you are independently weathly it has to be done. Tempermental is just another word for immature.

If I deal with an idiot customer, I simply tell myself that someone will end up giving it back to them twofold, that's how karma works. But I refuse to bring myself down to their level cause then that reflects badly on ME!

As Vonnie says ALL jobs end up mundane, boring & just a pain. Just look at it for what it is. You are there to EARN a paycheck. Unless you got another job lined up, put on a happy face while at work, be polite & do your job. When you walk out at the end of the day forget about it til the next morning.

Is is easy to do? NO, but it's a job.

Just because you took a job doesn't mean you have to stay there forever. Get some more education, get your resume out, but what are you going to do while you proceed with that process? Sit on your a$$? You've got to do something to be a productive member of society.

A job is a source of income, and if you don't have any income, that's worse than a mediocre job. Besides, you could be getting a discount on HTIB and Monster Cables!

I suppose it's safe to assume that you have a strong interest in audio or HT. Why not utilize your experence and interest in that field? There is more than just retail. You could become an HT installer, you could get an EE education and do design or production work, you could become a technician and do repair work.

There is no secret to happiness. You can not expect, nor do you deserve, happiness if you spend half your waking hours doing something that does not engage you in some positive way. Most happy people have several different careers in their lifetimes, they never stop learning or loose their interest in the world around them and they are universally curious people.

One of the more interesting people in my aquaintance has been an airline captain, a writer and an attorney. It's a lot of effort to become trained at any one of these things. It's the price of happiness.

sounds like you do need a dose of "DILLIGAF" long story short, care about the things you get short with less.

I dont work retail, but I do work with a government agancy dealing with the public, believe me, I get some jerks in my offices. If they get upset at something (especially something I cant change), I don't let it bother me. they're the ones with the problem, not me. not that I dont try to help, but I believe telling the god's honest truth IS helping them, wether they like to hear it or not.

When my job is going bad, I honestly start to think of a job that I would hate to have. It helps take the edge off of the day.

very few people like their jobs.. we have jobs as someone pointed out.. as a source of income.. and it adds structure and worth to our lives. take the job, then continue to look for a new one.

at your age.. don't be so tempermental.. it won't get you very far.

Finally find some type of job you do like.. if you don't like working with other people.. look for something where you work alone.

Change your attitude, seriously. Your attitude is everything. Get what you can out of the job; for resume purposes, money, managerial experience, whatever. Look at it like this, you gotta do it anyway, so why convince yourself that it sucks?

Silver lining, clouds, that kind of stuff.

As Mark can attest (or any other military people), you do alot of **** in the Army that just plain sucks. Put a positive spin on it--have fun with it, joke about it; but get over it. I have some of the best memories from the Army doing some of the most unenjoyable things--true stuff. You have to find ways in life, to glean something positive out of everything, otherwise you would never try anything. Those things that you cannot glean anything from (burning piles of **** in Kuwait--a story for another time), you simply laugh your **** off about, because it's worthless and funny.

If you have clerical skills, and are fairly close to a military installation, check www.cpol.army.mil for job announcements at the GS level. Good pay, excellent benefits, and rock-solid job security.

How are you at MATH? The reason I ask is, if you hate dealing with the general public(like ME), consider a building trade; electrician, carpenter, plumbing, hvac.
And ALL trades involve some sort of math, but, very little customer service skills required.

....seems to be from people who hate their jobs, so I don't know that I'd follow it. Unless you want to be like them.
Work doesn't have to suck, it can actually be enjoyable, but you have to find what it is you like to do, and pursue it.
If you're young, you can afford to follow your passion, and see if you can make a career of it.
The older you get the more it becomes about the money, because by then you are bought in, and have to do "whatever" to make ends meet, even if it sucks.
I have a many friends who are living out their dreams. One who plays video games for a living...no ****...all day long then writes reviews.
I have a friend one who is a film critic, one who reviews restaurants, one who is a chef in a restaurant, one who leads whitewater rafting trips...and so on.
The hard part is deciding what you would "like to do". Then its just a matter of time and distance. If you keep at it you will get there.
Or you can take the other route....go for the money, hate what you do and try to buy back your happiness with toys.

It always amazes me how few people make their dreams come true, even more amazing is how few people even try.

The choice is up to you.

well i went into orientation today and i guess i'll be okay. i told them i wouldn't be able to work as much as I previously mentioned and they were fine w/ it since i have summer classes.

i just get all worked up over nothing for some reason.

I'm a little taken back by this. I love my job! There are some things about it that I don't like, but these are few and far between. I wouldn't exchange my job for too many other jobs out there. I'm no big shot or earn a lot of money. I enjoy working with bright people who are enthusiastic and enjoy doing what they are doing. There is nothing like the thrill of completing a successful project where the customer is happy and the company makes a lot of money. I like working in teams that enjoy working together and are dedicated to achieving success. Petty, back stabbers, and phony people find our organization unbearable and leave in a hurry. WE have a significant number of our employmnet population here that have spend their lives (40+ years) working for our company. The most common reason given is that they like to work with intelligent and enthusiastic people in a teamwork environment.

Many of our retirees come back as contractors as they miss the challenge and the people. I don't think our company is unique, but it has been in business for 121 year. Oh yes, I work for the Westinghouse Electric Company.

Some people live to work, I work to live. I like my job alright, and I'm very good at logistical type jobs because I'm organized, anal as hell, and an efficiency freak. I have just never had a specific career "goal." I'll shovel **** if it pays good.
