How is the quality on computer blue-ray players?

Will there be a difference when playing BD from my computer dekstop onto my 52" screen than with a standalone player? My video card has HDMI out so no problem there. My computer is also extremely fast, so there would be no lagging.

Oh 1 more thing, how is regular dvd quality? Are there good programs that UPSCALE from computer DVD players?

Never hear of upscaling from a computer player. There could be one out there. The cheapest bet to a very good blu ray player and good upscaling is the PS3. One could never go wrong with a PS3.

I wanted to get a blu ray player for my computer so I could burn blu ray movies, but a 50 gig disc costs $50, 2x what a regular blu ray movie costs!

The reason I want one for my computer is because its cheaper than the PS3 (A LOT cheaper). The LG GGW-H20L is Blue Ray Writer, HD DVD Reader, DVD R/RW, CD R/RW and it is $178 on Amazon. The reviews on Newegg.com are pretty descent.

I was going to connect this to both my bedroom and living room HDTV's (via HDMI) and could save like $1000 on 2 blue-ray players

HTPC is an old thing, and very powerful in upscaling. All you need is software and time.

The problem with PC BluRay players right now is the support from playback software. What I've heard is they are extremely buggy and do not support a lot of things. Some of the drives come with software but many end up paying for additional software so cost will go up. You might want to try searching different forums, something like HTF or AVS, for more info.

I am holding out myself. I am going to get one in about another 6 or so months. I waited on the HD, and I can wait a little longer till the prices drop, speed increases, media drops, and support is present.
