What should I offer the seller for these Monitor 10s?

Posted on local CL. The seller had posted them on CL earlier for $275 and when they did not sell he posted them on e-bay for a buy-it-now of $300, and now they are back on the local CL.
I'm thinking I should offer something like $185 but I don't know if that is in the reasonable range to offer. Given the sale price history I'm thinking I could start at $185 and see where the negotiations progress to.
I have a pair of Monitor 7s and a pair of R15s with a Sansui 7070 running them. I would either replace the R15s with these or build another vintage system around the Monitor 10s.
Any opinion / experiences would be helpful, and thanks in advance!

I can't stand when people list a item for $1 and then have a different price in the ad.
They are peerless which is nice, but that price is still high."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -
They probably do that to indicate the price is negotiable.
-
Partner, I'd shop around. I picked up a set in good condition, just normal wear and dings for 25 + years for $69 on the 'bay. Even with a sketchy tweeter I'm still going to be in just over a Benjamin total for the set after repairs.
-
Amazing condition but you're right, $185 or maybe even 200 is probably the highest I'd go. He'll probably be offended by an offer that's nearly half his asking price but it's worth a shot since they're overpriced in the ads.
My 7's were in the area of 80 - 100 but are in a lot worse condition. -
I wouldn't offer over $150.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
-
Local is a big plus. They do have the peerless which saves you on the tweeter upgrade. Say you got them at $200, and they are mint You would be done minus a possible crossover upgrade. Those monitor 10's are the best monitor 10's made. The only negative is that you are real close at that price range to getting some SDA's.
BenPlease. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

I just sold a pair of very clean 10B's (SL-2000 tweeters) for $125 on Craigslist.
At the dollars you are offering/negotiating, you can almost get into SDA's 2's if you are patient..... -
I seen a pair here in Utah sell for $175.00. I have the exact pair and they are an awesome entry level speaker.HT Theater

Thanks for the info everyone. I am apparently not getting e-mail updates of replies so I'm going to have to check my account settings.
I like the idea of snapping up some SDAs for close to that price. I admit I have not seen anything close to that price for any SDA that I have seen for sale so far.
I have corresponded with the seller of the Monitor 10s just before he listed them on e-bay (where they did not sell at buy-it-now of $300) and he offered them to me for $275 at that point. They are still on the CL.
I'm gonna wait. Who knows? Maybe a set of SDAs will come up in an affordable price range. That's something that would be SO sweet! -

I wish I was in Utah. I really don't want to ship speakers, but I must say that the price is right. (I paid $80 for my Monitor 7Cs with local pckup.)
Thanks for the link...I might just contact the seller and at least see what happens. -
I really like the Monitor 10. I bought a local pair for around $100 of CL intending to part them out for the four MW6501 drivers I needed for a SDA 1A project. I like them so well I kept them and intend to upgrade the crossovers with polypropylene caps.
There wouldn't be any harm in latching onto a pair at the right price while you wait for the SDAs you want. Try to find an minty older pair (like these in Columbus) with the Peerless tweeters. In my view, they are a lot more valuable than the newer models because the Peerless is a very fine tweeter; a keeper.
If you buy a newer pair with the SL2000 tweeters, you will probably end up spending another $98 to buy the RD0194 replacement tweeters.
BTW-Some were made with SL3000s but I've never seen one.The world is full of answers, some are right and some are wrong. - Neil Young -

So you might be saying that an offer of $200 or less might be fair for a pair like the one I am asking about, because of the condition and the Peerless tweeters? (I assumed that the pair you got for $100 didn't have the Peerless?) I know some folks on here don't prefer the Peerless because the sound is "too bright" but there are factors including the listening environment, signal source, and even the ear of the hearer that affect that observation.
Thanks for the post. -
I wouldn't pay over $200 for a pair of Monitor 10's unless they were dipped in gold. The fact that they have the Peerless tweeter does raise the value, but his prices are still way high. IMO, I would say $150 would be a fair price."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche

+1. I wrote "at the right price".
I would offer $100, give him you email address and tell him you will have cash in hand when he is ready to move them. I imagine that, in a few weeks, he'll call you with a more tempting offer.
These speakers are not going to sell at the price he is asking IMHO.
BTW- Mine do have the peerless tweeters. The world is full of answers, some are right and some are wrong. - Neil Young -

They're still listed. I'll run the $100 offer up the flagpole and see what kind of salute I get.
I'll post here if anything develops. -
Probably won't be a good reaction at first but maybe he'll realize it's way over what it should be. When I get offers of about 25 - 50% of what my asking price is I'm not usually too happy or ignore them all together, but that's usually just a bunch of lowballers trying to take down an already good price so this is a different situation.

$300 is nuts, but $100 is insulting if the guy has any idea what they are worth. These have the peerless guys.Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. With craigslist, everytime I've listed something the first 5 replies are quick lowballers doing this exact same thing. It's annoying and a waste of time for both parties. I say either let this one pass as they're clearly overpriced or offer him a little more than a single bill.
-
My original thought was $185, but maybe start at $150?
Thanks for all the replies by the way... -
