Pleased with Oppo DV-980H

Got the Oppo last night and calibrated with DVE. Nice S-DVD palyer, wish I hadn't spent $799 on the Denon 3 years ago. I saw no macroblocking, or any other anamolies, but have only viewed a few DVD's on it. The picture/color is crisp and clean, and the player is very fast.

The DV-980H is a great, inexpensive alternative if your BluRay doesn't do well with S-DVD's. For the $169 price tag, It's a no brainer.

I bought one a month or so ago for the bedroom just for the 7.1 analog outputs , and for the fact I got tired of disconnecting my 981HD Oppo to test other components on the kitchen table

So I left the 980 hooked up and now the 981HD is only for test purpose duty....one other thing I liked about the 980 over the 981HD is the fact that the tray has finger cutouts to remove the discs...the 981HD has no such cutouts and removing discs from the tray is a pain in the ****.

You won't see macroblocking from the 980h because it doesn't have that Faroudja chip. Its a custom Mediatek chip. It is actually what Oppo recommends for displays that suffer from macroblocking with the Faroudja chips (ie: Panny Plasmas).
If you feel like playing around, try the analog audio outputs from that 980h. According to the guys at the Secrets website, they sound quality is very respectable.

Since I'm low rent, I use my 980 as my main music player. It's far better than the Sony BD player for music via the analog outs. It's also a slightly better upconverter than the Faroudja based 971. Slightly softer pq, but better color depth in 1080p and absolutely no MB.

Based on memory, as the 2910 has been gone for quite awhile, the Oppo picture is sharper (Denon was soft), colors seem to be more natural/neutral. The Oppo is definitely faster too.

I've heard the raves about the analog audio, but I'm all digital--if it matters, the audio sounds very good thru Toslink!

I bought one too, as it decodes DSD (SACD and DVD audio) though HDMI. It is Oppo's only player that does - even their latest and greatest player uses the 7.1 outs for SACD and DVD-A. Very impressive for the price.

I'm kinda on the fence between the 980/981. I was wondering how to seperate the front outputs on the 980. I want to have 5.1 analog, plus a seperate 2 channel out. Could I use a y splitter for the front channels? The 981 has a seperate 2 channel out, but doesn't have componet video. I would like to have hdmi and componet video out, which the 980 has.


How is the audio on the 980 throught the 5.1 analog outs? SACD/DVD-A

The 971 and it sounds like the 981 had separate 2 channel out + 5.1. The 980 has 7.1 analog outs exclusively. I suppose y splitters would work. The analog section of the 980, I'm told by Oppo, is better than the 981. From my experience, it's better than the 971.
