Need good DVD Player

I have a PS3 in my home theater room, but am looking for a GOOD dvd player for my living room. The screen size in my living room will be 52-62" (haven't bought it yet).

I am looking for a good DVD player. I do not need blue ray, just a regular DVD player. Most importantly, I want it to have

1) Upscaling to 1080p, and
2) Play DivX and Xvid files.

Can anyone recommend a DVD player known for its great upscaling?

Additionally, is there a DVD player that also upscales DivX and Xvid files?

How will the output of the DivX and XVid files be on a 52"-62" tv? How bad is the pixel structure?

Does anyone recommend an external HD like MVix that plays computer formats and that can be connected to the display? Or is the quality better on a good dvd player?

Sorry for all the questions. I just want the best quality to view my SD dvd's and Xvid and Divx files.

Go on the lookout for Toshiba HD A3 players. Although this is technically an HD player, it was a great unit for up converting SD DVD's. It also will play HD DVD's (not Blu) of course which you can sometimes pick up as cheaply as SD disks.

With the demise of HD this is probably your best option for finding a terrific unit on the cheap.

I just picked up a Yamaha DVD-S1700 for $150 brand new, including shipping on Ebay. These were originally $450 retail, and are currently $300 at Crutchfield. So far I am very pleased with it's prformance. It also adds DVD-A and SACD support.

I also tried an Oppo 983H a few weeks ago ($400). This is supposed to be the best SD player available, with ABT upscaling and deinterlacing chips. On my 42" screen I could not tell the difference between it, and the Yamaha at 1080p (or lower). The 983 would not play any of my Divx/Xvid files correctly. No matter what setting I chose, it stretched the picture to fill the screen, distorting the image. I sent it back. The Yamaha plays all of them perfectly.

I had an HD-A2 previously, the start up and load times will drive you crazy. The HD-DVD players also do not support Divx/Xvid files.

Good point on the load times William. I didn't even think of that.

I have a Pioneer DV-400v in my bedroom that upscales better than my Oppo and for $100.00 less. Upscales just as good as my PS3 and does divX and avi files better than them all. No other player I've seen (and I looked at many) upscales as well for such little money

I second this.....I've got the 400vk,which i bought on ebay refurbished for $56.
It plays flawlessly, perfect upscaling to 1080i.....close to my reference player:
    the HDAX2.
    The 400vk has it's own color management,too.
For under $100,I'd take this over the Oppo, anyday and twice on sundays.
