I did not yet get a price on the tergitols ( 3 and 9). It's fine if RT1 steps up and wants to do it. Just let us know. You know what they say...."a gallon of tergitol is a terrible thing to waste":D:D

Guys,
I have a pint bottle of each of the solutions, you only use two teaspoons of each per gallon so a pint lasts a while, send me a container of whatever water you want(gallon/half gallon) (maybe directly from that water place Ricardo mentioned?) and I will mix it and ship to you. Just the cost of the shipping back to you after you get it.
About the only problem might be if the Canadien Government does not allow it to be shipped to you, you know those Canadien's.:D Of course if you happen to be swinging through Georgia...............stop by and pick it up.
Just PM for my addy, I will be around today, then gone most of this weekend, I rarely work Friday's anymore so long weekends away from computers are becoming my specialty.
Retirement looms, well, three years to go.

hmmmmm...so THAT is where those bottles wound up.

Just do it!
I used the smallest recyclable water bottle I could find to send a pint to Joe. Instead of drinking the water from the bottle, pour it into a cup so you do not contaminate the bottle.
With a pint of each, you will be able to make LP cleaning fluid for many years.
Where are you planning on getting a discounted cost on the Tergitol?
Fongolio,
If this group buy doesn't proceed, let me know. As the OP, we can arrange to send some Tergitol to you as I am the next prov over. All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed and third, it is accepted as self evident. -
OK. Here's what Ive found out. I can get both the s-3 and s-9 tergitols and high quality bottles. Enough tergitol for each person to get 1 pint of each variety. This will cost about $30 plus shipping. Let me know and I'll push the order button. PS: I dunno about shipping to Canada, but this stuff is quite safe and don't expect a problem.

If you need another I'll bite. I have been using the product from

but I'm anxious too compare (particularly if its cheaper). -
I ordered the tergitols. I will post an update when the shipment comes. Shouldn't be too long.
-
Tergitols, both s-3 and s-9 are received. I will PM people now w/details. I checked on shipping, USPS and FEDEX. I plugged in a couple zip codes and got about 10$ for USPS and $12-13 for FEDEX. That seems awful high to me! Anybody with shipping experience have a better suggestion or have prices just gone thru the roof because of $140/barrel oil?

I have received checks from Ricardo, Scompracer, Bikerboy and Capecodder. All were shipped except Ricardo pending his availability. PM's sent to everyone with tracking numbers. Did my best to pack. Hopefully all will be OK. Just to let you know, I can't ship anything after thursday for a few days. For those of you that got shipments, please let me know if it arrived safely. Best to all.
PS: This shipping stuff is a lot of work. I never really did much of it. Takes time. Not complaining, but pitying people like George Grand and Doro who seem to do it all the time!! -
The formulas for mixing tergitol and distilled water are in the range of .25 parts of each tergitol (S-3 and S-9) per 100 parts water. OK. That means 1 part each tergitol and 400 parts water or 1:400. So, 1 pint of each tergitol would make 400 pints of record cleaner. At 8 pints per gallon, that's 50 gallons of record cleaner. Wow!! That'll last a while!! I am experimenting now and trying to do a 1:400 mixture in 10% isopropyl/DW blend. Seems better. Promotes rapid drying. Anyone else experiment?

I don't like alcohol on my records (that's just me) but I have a vacuum machine so I don't need it for rapid drying. The way I understand my Tergitol mixture (I did it awhile ago) 1 tablespoon of each per gallon of distilled or triple distilled water. I still have other fluids to get rid of before I use the Tergitol mixture regularly.
Thanks to Ken S. for turning us all on to this and John M for experimenting so much.
EDIT: Correction, that is two tablespoons of each Tergitol formula to one gallon of distilled water. -

You need to remove the Tergitol solution from the LP! You also need to rinse the LP to ensure all the Tergitol is off the LP! Do not let the Tergitol solution dry on the LP.
If you do not have a vacuum based RCM, I would not use the Tergitol cleaning solution. Get a solution specifically for use without a RCM.
Before using the Tergitol solution, give the bottle a vigorous shake to ensure the solution has not separated. This is important.
Mix small batches. I only mix 300ml batches; 300ml water and 0.75ml of each Tergitol. I use an eye dropper with volume markings to get the correct amount of Tergitol. All truth passes through three stages. Joe,
Your formula is nearly 4 times the recommended mixture of 1:400. There are about 15 ml in a tablespoon, so 2 tablespoons is 30 ml. There are 3784 ml in a gallon, so your solution is 3784/30= 1:126. I have tried solutions mixed on the heavy side like this and found them to be fine, but this would absolutely make it mandatory to use a distilled water wash on your VPI RCM. But, you probably already do it!!:):) -

That maybe the case Bro, but here is a quote from Ken S. the Polkie who started this whole Tergitol thing. The quote is from an email he sent me 2/27/2007, it is as follows;
"Hello Joe,
I have found a cleaner that works very well. There are two chemicals made by Tergitol one is 15-S-3 and the other is 15-S-9 and they can be bought from www.talasonline.com. This is a library supply company and they are very responsive. You would mix two tablespoons of each chemical into a gallon of distilled water. I usually rinse the record, after cleaning, with a distilled water rinse, you could also use the general, every-day rinse made by Record Doctor. This would give you enough basic material to last many years.
Enjoy, Ken"
I've only used the Tergitol solution a few times as I still have gallons of other chemical cleaners that need to be used up before I employ the Tergitol full time. I received the two Tergitol chemicals from a friend of ours here in our club.
BTW you have email. -

It is absolutely necessary to rinse the LPs regardless of the concentration of the Tergitol cleaning solution. From the National Library Of Canada
Grooved discs are best cleaned using a record cleaning machine such as the Keith Monks, VPI, Nitty Gritty using 0.25 part of Tergitol 15-S-3 and 0.25 parts of Tergitol 15-S-9 per 100 parts of distilled water. These machines allow for an even dispersion of fluid and can then vacuum the liquid leaving a clean, dry surface. The discs must then be rinsed thoroughly with distilled water and vacuumed dry to eliminate any trace of detergent residue. From The Library of Congress
4. To manually clean records, CDs, or DVDs manually, spray the solution onto the surface, and wipe with an eyeglass or other similar soft wipe to remove contaminants. ALWAYS FOLLOW CLEANING WITH A THOROUGH RINSING WITH DEIONIZED WATER TO REMOVE ALL TRACES OF DETERGENT: LEAVING DETERGENT ON THE OBJECT MIGHT FACILITATE DEGRADATION OF THE OBJECT. Finally, wipe the object dry using a soft, nonabrasive, lint-free cloth. You need to mix your Tergitol VERY accurately, carefully and
thoroughly, otherwise it comes out of suspension and instead
of cleaning the disc it leaves behind a residue that is
*difficult* to remove. The 15-S-3 floats on water, and
the 15-S-9 sinks in water - you practically have to emulsify
the Tergitol and water (a bit like mixing oil-vinegar salad
dressing).
The biggest mistake that I've found in the field is that people
will use too much Tergitol in their cleaning mixture (ie. 1:200
instead of 1:400) because they believe that a higher
concentration will clean better, only to find the opposite is
true.
There are those who do not advocate the use of Tergitol because
it can leave a residue. I've not had this problem, but only
because I use it quite judiciously and mix it carefully and
thoroughly (forgive me if I'm repeating myself, but this is
important).
I generally mix 1:400 (not 1:100 or 1:200 as others recommend)
to avoid the Tergitol from coming out of suspension. So to
mix a 600 ml batch, I would use 1.5 ml (measured with a
precision dispenser) of 15-S-3 and 1.5 ml 15-S-9.All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed and third, it is accepted as self evident. -

Wouldn't 2 teaspoons of each pretty much do the trick? There are 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon, so:
10/3784 = 1:378
I'm hoping that that's close enough. It is absolutely necessary to rinse the LPs regardless of the concentration of the Tergitol cleaning solution.
In your opinion, would a steam clean using distilled water followed by vacuuming be sufficient after cleaning with the Tergitol solution?Wristwatch--->Crisco -
Not all teaspoons or tablespoons measure out to the correct volume. Your best bet would be to use a specific measuring instrument to get the exact amount.
I sometimes follow with a blast of steam, but always use ultrapure water from a local lab supply company for the rinse.Wouldn't 2 teaspoons of each pretty much do the trick? There are 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon, so:

I'm the OP in this thread but I got my tergitol directly from Talas. I've mixed mine precisely accorcding to the 400:1 ratio and have been having great results. I always follow with a rinse and vacuum (I use a Nitty Gritty 1.5fi). Sometimes if the record is exceptionally dirty I'll repeat two or even three times. On several websites people warn against too strong a mixture because of the possibility of residue build-up that's even more difficult to clean than a dirtly record. I would think steaming would be good also.SDA-1C (full mods)

Okay, all this is very interesting. John how about the conversion to American liquid measurements from your 300 ml to .75 ml Tergitol mix. I've been having a hell of a time finding a decent conversion tool on the web to do the conversion.
Thanks,

Joe, try this site. http://www.curezone.com/conversions.asp
