I'm shopping for subs to use in my two-channel music rig. Of course, my pre has no bass management, but I don't want to run my mains full range, so....I need subs that have high-pass filtering on the outputs. This turns out to be a rather rare feature nowadays. In the price range I'm looking at, only the SVS SB12 & PB12NSD, along with the Velodyne DLS4000R have it. But I can't seem to find any mention of high-pass filtering on the Polk web-site or even in the DSWPRO600 manual. But, Crutchfield, in one place indicates the high AND low level outputs are high-pass filtered. Another indicates not. So can anyone here provide the straight dope? Filtered or not, THAT is the question!:)

If the sub has a cross-over dial on the back, that is where you set the high pass filter. On most subs, it must be connected at speaker level (high level) for this to work with the speakers connected to the sub. The sub should have an in/out at speaker (high) level. The receiver will send the entire signal to the sub, the sub will then send everything higher than the cross-over setting to the speakers. If there is a low level in/out, I'm not sure if a signal input at that level is transferred to the speaker (high) level outputs.

I owned a Velo that had a selectable 80/100 Hz high pass for the line level outs. Usually, the crossover/frequency knob on a sub is a low pass filter only.

For subs without a line level high pass filter (most), this box from Hsu should work nicely. You can choose 2 different filter frequencies, which gives some nice flexibility with your specific main speakers.

Thanks guys, but the problem is solved. I ordered two Velodyne DLS-4000R's this morning. These subs, like adam2434 mentioned, have selectable 80 or 100 Hz high-pass filtering. They use first order slopes (high pass), which to me seems too shallow, but oh well. Maybe there is a good reason for that. My hunch is it's probably just cheaper than a second or third order. I'll see how I get along with it. That Hsu box is definitely something to keep in mind, though. Thanks again!
