I admit, I'm an idiot for buying a piece of **** Samsung BR player. What piece of **** this thing turned out to be. OMFG!!

What else are you guys using? No I'm not interested in a gaming platform to watch BR discs on.

    Thats too bad because not only is it the best value, its also one of the best players and is feature complete with BDlive and DTSMA decoding.

    I just bought the Sony BDP-S300. It's a little lethargic on loads but otherwise works fine. No ethernet connect but I was able to update the firmware via a CD. They just released to the new Sami BD-P1500. But ugly and I haven't heard how it performs. I would wait a couple months until the new Sony BDP-350 comes out.

    The main drawback to the PS3 for me is that it has no IR remote so I could not use it with my Harmony remote. It also wouldn't look good with other rack components.

    The PS3 is the best as of yet and while it plays games it is also the fastest loading player out there, it has a web browser, a 40-60-80g Hard drive (the higher-g has some other features the 40 dosen't, not sure which) to store and play music and was the first to offer the new HD/Master formats. It has yet to not play any movie out, which is a problem with almost all players and the CD quality sound is very good to excellant. I'm sure I'm missing some details but for the $4-500 price the PS3 is a outstandingly good buy. You don't have to play the games.
    You can also look at Denon's 2500BTCI or 3800BDCI I have heard good things on them also they're definetly worth a look also.

    Without a doubt, the Panny BD-30 is the best bang for the buck stand alone out there. You'll be hard pressed to find a better stand alone for the price. The only problem you are going to have is getting your hands on one, they are hard to come by.

    Be patient. Wait a couple months. There are a whole slew of new players hitting the shelves between now and the end of summer. I'd wait and see how those pan out. Wait for reviews and check AVSforum user threads to see if any major bugs are showing up.
    If you can't wait, get the Panny BD30. It's only weakness is SD upconverting. For Bluray, it is really a standout right now.

    Agree with Bill, the Panasonic DMP-BD30 is outstanding with BluRay, but doesn't do very well with S-DVD's. It's fairly fast loading, dead quiet.

    Get over the fact that the ps3 plays games. It's a serious HT component. It's also less expensive that all the entry level BR players.

    Here's a nice quote from a Sound and Vision review,
    "BOTTOM LINE With its crisp 1080p Blu-ray Disc playback, flexible, wide-ranging audio options, and mounds of other network and gaming features, the Sony PlayStation 3 is nothing short of awesome. From my perspective, the only reason someone would buy a standalone Blu-ray player instead of a PS3 is a complete aversion to videogames — either that, or the desire for a more traditional A/V form factor (that also includes upconversion of standard-def DVDs). That said, Sony's PS3 game console is one of the most exciting, well-executed home theater products I've laid my hands on in a long time. Good luck finding one!"

    The reviewer went to rate the PS3 higher than the Panasonic DMP-BD10 and updated Samsung BD-P1000.     Don't sweat it Wallstreet....Franks one of those "set in his ways" guys. I like a guy that says no and means it.

    I'd check out the Sony or Denon. Your Sony experience sounds less than cheerful but the Denon 2500BTCI and 3800BDCI are very nice on the ground. Is that more than you want to spend? If so that Panasonic reads well and the Sony BDP300 is also a solid nice player but no SACD. I just picked one up for $250 used......$350 new? Something like that.

    Is SACD a must? or an option?
    CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Not yesterday, not today, and not tomorrow. If you want to doicuss the merits of a PS3 do so in your own thread on that subject.

    This reviewer doesn't mention the fact that the PS3 is LOUD, and it does not have an infrared remote. Yes, you can get a 3rd party dongle that will let you do IR control, but it still doesn't control power on/off. The PS3 is versatile, but it is not perfect.

    Also, there could a WAF in play here. My wife didn't mind when I added a Bluray player to our system, but when I mentioned how one of my friends bought a PS3, she went off on how immature he is, etc, etc. I then mentioned that I almost got one instead of the BD30 and she basically let me know that she wouldn't have been happy (kind terms) if I had brought home a PS3.

    You should get a PS3. Its a great Blu Ray player plus it plays games.

    I was in that boat when i was shopping for a bd player...everyone kept saying ps3...i didnt want a ps3 and i still dont want one..besides my harmony 880 wouldnt work with a ps3:D

    BTW my 55+ year old parents prefers their PS3 has their media center player.
    Even my mother can manage to operate the entire setup without using the harmony.

    PS I am an adult, and from what i have seen more mature than you. Pretty sad.

    You may have been here longer, but post count doesnt mean jack. I have a ton of polk stuff and thats why i started coming here.

    I dont have any personal problems, life is great. Hell even my sports teams are kicking ****.

    It should be the first dedicated blu-ray player to meet or exceed the ps3 featurewise in every area except maybe the SACD playback of the 60 and 80 gig ps3 models and other multimedia features.

    Frank, I just bought the new Samsung BR player the BD-P1500. I could not give it higher marks on any level. It loads quickly, has amazing up conversion, firmware is a snap (current out of the box, but a simple memory stick upgrade at Samsung.com when new updates arrive).

    I was in the same boat and didn't want another game platform. I love my new Sammy BR player and for $399 it was a steal. I know your down on Sammy but the 1500 that just came out is awesome IMO.

    +1,000,000,000 Get a PS3 and get a blu ray remote (blu-wave or Sony, both are good).

    It's fast, It's crazy easy to update the firmware, DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD (or w/e they are) support.
