PC audio drivers?

I built this gaming pc a couple of weeks ago, and although Realtek HD says it does DD, DTS, etc. I can't get more than 2 ch. out of my rcvr., via the optic cable.
I have a Creative Labs external audio converter,(via a USB port) but when I tried to make it the master device, it wouldn't work.
Couple of questions:1. Do I have to completely delete the realtek driver to get it to work?
2. Is there another on-board audio software I can use to replace the realtek?
I know I can get an audio card, but that seems redundant, with the ports already there?
Thanks
EDIT: I think my realtek program is HD, which I just discovered is 32 bit, vs. 24 bit from a few years ago, which is what my rcvr. may or may not recognize.

I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

Not sure this helps, but disable the onboard (Realtek) in the bios and then try the Creative as the master device.

We'll need to know your operating system(XP, Vista?)...

Whoops. Vista 64 OS, Gigabyte GA-MA78GMS2H mobo, AMD 64x2 6000 cpu,
Nvidia GT8800, Seagate 500g HDD.
When I attach the Creative labs adaptor, the pc downloaded the drivers, and showed it in the sound mgmt. menu, but when I made it the master, and disabled the Realtek, still no sound?
