I went to update a customer's computer today and saw that Win XP SP 3 issued today, I know there were some previous Release Candidates - anybody experienced the "real" SP yet?

Yep, been installing it all day yesterday and today on our lab machines at work. No issues, no problems, quick install, makes up for a ton of updates between SP2 and SP3. Super nice if you are building a machine from scratch and only have up to SP2.

    Good luck.

I forget the latest build number, but yes. I had a couple of mildly annoying bugs with the prior candidates, and this one seems to be the same (better than sp2), BUT without the bugs. Painless install. Everything where it was supposed to be.

Has anyone installed SP3 on a computer with a wireless connection that uses 802.1x authentication? One of my staff ran across it today and reported that he couldn't get to the authentication settings to turn off the "use your windows login credentials to authenticate" feature.

I installed SP3 and all is well. I had a "New Hardware Found" popup, but took care of it via another update session, there's a new window that comes up when I start "Remote Desktop Connection" but you can opt not to see it again. I just downloaded the executable file.

I am 0 for 2 on attempts to install SP3 on my desktop and laptop. I am now wading through the stuff linked below trying to find out why M$ has sent me buggy code again.

    Is SP3 a cumulative patch like SP2?

I believe it is. That was part of the reason I expected no problems. :(

Other forums are noting trouble with machines running Norton in particular. :p

BTW, I downloaded the entire beast, disconnected from the net, and shut off AVG, Spybot S&D and Spywareblaster before starting the update. I had plenty of hard drive space. Still looking for the issue that caused the update to hang on both machines.

Eh. Kinda leary. I installed the SP3 candidate a couple weeks ago and a couple things went hinky. Im not sure I trust this new version yet. Ill wait a while and let them work out the bugs. SP2 is working fine for me and my 6 year old compy.

The language tool bar keeps turning itself on...

but I used the settings window to turn it off. It better stay off!

I also noticed the "Software Explorers" icon in the Control Panel, it links to Windows Defender to check out what vendors have what software installed on your computer.

I did SP3 on mom's computer. No hitches.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

I'm curious how this is going to roll out at work. I'm not looking forward to dealing with helpdesk requests for the next little while after we do...

I'll have to try it out myself and watch some threads carefully to identify any patterns of issues that arise.

Actually, except for the lengthy installation that was expected since all service packs take a while, it wasn't that bad. Everything went smoothly and I haven't had a single complaint from the other 40 users. It threw in the newer version of remote desktop that I never before bothered to upgrade to and it's actually a lot nicer than the old one I was using.

    So far so good.

I did this today with no problems. Well at first I was getting a install error so I defragged and set my privacy options to accept all cookies and then it worked.

Dredging up an old thread here, but I've done about a fifty computers so far and the only problems I've run into are just old ones with very small windows partitions that end up running out of space during the install. Luckily, it seems that when this update fails you're not put into such a bad situation as you would normally expect (such as when SP2 fails and takes everything with it).

SP3 is beautiful! If you have old windows discs it's a LOT faster to do a fresh install now. I keep both sp2 and 3 packages on a portable hard drive for fresh installs now and it has cut hours off the update process.
