I recently joined the thousands who bought the cherry R50s from Frys for about $160 delivered to East Coast locations. I was considering the Monitor 50s too. But the Monitors 50s are not $100 better than the R50s. The two are very similar in construction.
I say, if debating between the R50s and Monitor 50s, take the R50s from Frys.
If you are trying to fill a large room or want high-end sound, by high-quality speakers like the Monitor 70s.
Here's the Fry's deal:

Oh, how are the R50s? They are exactly what's described in the reliable online reviews. But for the aspiring audiophile, the R50s are like marijuana: the gateway drug. Watch out.Marantz DV4001 CD and DVD

Agreed, as I have mentioned in other posts, the R50's are nice for their price but if your budget can be bigger then try to get into RTi or LSi speakers if you can. They are simply better speakers.
I have never heard the Monitor 50s. The tweeter is different from the R50s, and it is probably better. I have read that they image a little better than the R50's. Can't say if it's worth the money.
For HT, with any speaker you will have to get a sub so don't worry about the low end. In that regards you could pick up some used RTi6's for about $200, then use a sub. This is a nice bookshelf but may be a little bright for music.
As always, try to listen to the speakers to make sure they sound good to you before you commit. -
Hey Max,
Your right but the climb to the top is fun. I think the phase out of the monitors is for the new line to go to BB in a month or so. There was a page on it back a month or so ago. Besides the only deal on the monitors is in maple which would force you to buy four of them at the least and you most love maple!Retired Onkyo 520 (returned broken HK 247)

Given the price of the R50's, can't see you going wrong with them. Furthermore, should you decide to upgrade you can move them to the rear.MAIN: Polk Lsi9s; Polk PSW505; Lsic (in box); Onkyo SR-875; Parasound 2250; Cambridge Audio 740C; LG BD370

As entry level speakers you can't go wrong with the R50s. I'd recommend it, but if you can save a bit more and get used RTi's you'll be a lot happier in the end -

That depends on how your finances are, and how receptive to speaker upgrades your significant other is.
