It's still free. They make you go to the website to upgrade because they want you to buy their product, but you can still find the free one on there.

    Go here to download.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Yes they do this every once in a while. The upgrades are no problem. The product is a great product, and I think the whole reason for the upgrade (kinda bi-annual) is to get people who love AVG to purchase the full version for the nominal fee of $20 or so dollars. I still use the free version.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. At some point they will stop letting you upgrade your virus definitions on the older versions and you will have to upgrade.

A virus scanner without upgraded virus definitions is useless, so pay attention to it.

I recently upgraded and purchased the full version of AVG 8.0. It cost more than $20, though, but I don't remember exactly. Maybe something like $40 - $50. A lot more features. It slowed my computer down, so I had to turn off the firewall and some sort of Internet scanner thingey, now all is well. I like having anti-virus software and other stuff bundled in a single product.

I've been using free AVG for several years and it works great. Norton sucks.

Well I un-installed AVG 7.5 then installed AVG 8.0 so far so good. Still running free, but the price I seen was $54.00

I have no issues with my current 7.5 version so I see no need to update.

I get a prompt every few days from AVG trying to get me to update but I just deny it.

By the way AVG is the ****...

Its one of the best programs I have ever used.

As I said before, at some point (if not already) there will no longer be virus definition updates for AVG 7 and you will have to upgrade to AVG 8. There's no reason NOT to - it's still free. If you insist on not upgrading for some stupid reason you might as well just uninstall the program altogether because it's worthless without constantly updated virus definitions.

Click on the AVG User Interface, then click on the LinkScanner icon. You'll find a check box where you can disable it. I think this is the one that was slowing down my computer because it scans every web page for viruses before you enter it.

I think my Norton is about to expire, as well as my SpySweeper or whatever the hell Best Buy put on my laptop. Hopefully I can remove those without any trouble (I have heard about a computer with Norton and it getting a virus after more than a week disconnected from the internet, but simply because the guy wouldn't resubscribe to Norton. That was the story anyway)

Anyway, long story short, maybe I'll give AVG a try.
Update: Once again allowed on polk forums from work! New job yaaaay. Well sorta.

AVG free is great. The paid version is pretty bloated. Not as bad as McCrappy, or Norton, but still slower.

Download AVG, disconnect from internet, uninstall Norton and then install AVG. I've done that on all the computers at my wifes work, and unlike previous Norton's the new ones seem to uninstall without throwing a fit.

Their bundle terms are pretty good; $169 for 5 licenses, 2 year term. Comes out to $17 per computer a year. Do a Club Polk group buy if you feel the need for the commercial version (automatic tracking cookie and adaware removal is nice to have).

Once I disabled LinkScanner, AVG has not slowed my system down. I'm not sure of the advantages between the paid and the free versions of AVG. I figured I'd try it and see what happens. I suppose I have a bit more peace of mind about getting viruses and other junk.

The paid version is "Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Spam, Firewall and LinkScanner"
while the free is just an AV scanner. Your browsing habits, and ability to spot junk should be the determining factor in which version you use. Even the best of us can get hit with a surprise.

You might not want to ignore anything that says update. It just makes sure you have the most recent virus lists so that you catch everything and don't get any new viruses.

Now if you mean upgrade, that's another story but, I don't recall ever seeing something pop-up from AVG asking me to upgrade and I have all the free products they offer.

As I said earlier, I'm still running the free version of 7.5. And I JUST earlier today updated my virus definitions, so they're still good. I've not had anything pop up asking me to upgrade my program, though.

The new AVG 8 free has everything but the firewall and anti-spam. The only other difference is a few advanced settings, which can be changed with the pro version, but not in the free version.

They've definitely been making it harder to download the free version (more insidious ways of hiding it on their website) but it's still there. It's hard to kvetch when such great software stays free for so long, though.
