i need suggestions and comments on these 2 possibilities. basically which will yeild better sound quality

1. iPOD directly connected to the amp using simple composite wires and ipod headfone out.

2. a low end cheap pioneer or kenwood headunit connected to the same amp using pre outs.

both iPOD and HU shall be running same quality mp3s. incase of HU, burnt on a CD-R

If youre going to be listening to MP3's then there wont be a difference. If youre talking about MP3's versus CD's for SQ then there is no doubt, a CD will generally sound better. Now there are MP3 formats that sound just as good as a CD but require a lot more space due to the larger file which kinda defeats the purpose of an Ipod.

Can you hook an Ipod up directly to an amp????? If it doesnt have passive outputs I dont think you can.

    iPod Pros:
    - no HU needed. therefore cheaper
    - direct control
    iPod Cons:
    - low pre-out voltage

    HU pros:
-higher pre-out voltage. can be exploited for better SQ.
    HU cons:
    - additional cost, added system complexity, ipod cable required.

    advice:
    - HU and an ipod cable to the HU.
    - only do the direct ting if u cant afford the HU at this moment.

    thank u all
i think i will look for alpine ida-x300 and let the usb imput handle my mp3s.

    ps
x300 or some alpine 988x series HU? i dont need a cd player, interface of x300 is better, but wt about tuning features? pre out is at 2V aswell.

how would that defeat the purpose... ur still fitting 100s of CDs onto a tiny little device and dont have to take CDs in and out... most of my songs on my ipod are converted at full quality... and i have 7000, so its still worth it. besides the fact that u cant scratch ur songs on an ipod.

That too! I'm a struggling student attending two schools... but I got a 4gb nano as a gift. I use it when I go for a run and with my hu. I would probably not have purchased one, though. I really like it's software, but it just seems that everyone buys one because its cool to have an ipod for an mp3 player.

i had a creaitve nomad jukebox in like 2003 or something that was 30gb and i got it for 200.... then in like 2005 for xmas i got a 30gb ipod.... then...... a girlfriends 80gb one broke her parents got her a new one she gave it to me i took it apart and it worked again........ but anyways i rarely buy CDs... in fact ill only buy a cd if i like every song on it or really like the artist, otherwise i make up for the 7000 songs i have by downloading them. i know im a terrible person.

any one used 6 inch sub woofers on rear shelf, free to air; in the trunk.
like kicker compVT 6.5, or JL w3 6in , etc?

how do they perform in free to air situations? just curious
