Correct me if I am wrong but you must use the component video outputs on the dvd to get a true widescreen picture.

    casey,
theres a bunch I don't understand about vidio and I'm just sharing what I have. My Cal Audio CL-20 is not progressive scan nor has component vidio out but has the option for both 16:9 and 4:3 so I think its moreso a function of the dvd player and not the connection.

I don't think, "but don't know for sure", that you can get a progressive image with s vidio... you need component connections and hdtv capable.

No. Not all DVDs will. A 16:9 Widescreen TV has a fixed Aspect Ratio (AR) of 1.66:1. Movies though, are filmed in various AR's. Most all are film in 2 AR's, 1.85:1 and 2.35:1. With the 1.85:1 you will not have black bars due to your TV's overscan. With movies that are 2.35:1 you will have small black bars. Most of you DVDs will have the specs on the back as to which AR they are shot in.

Well, sort-of. You need component cables wired up to a progressive scan player, wired to an HD-ready TV to get the true benefit of anamorphic DVDs (this is the only way). A standard DVD player with standard hook-up will still gain you a widescreen picture, just not as nice a looking picture.

    Mmmmm.... widescreen.

IIRC, 2.35:1 is true "movie theater" ratio, correct? I can't get those two straight.

There is no "true" movie theater ratio, it's whatever the director decides to use for his moive. Obviously, the more epic type movies use the 2.35:1 where your family and comedy types go with a 1.85:1.

Regardless, if you are into HT, I think a widescreen HD monitor and a progressive scan DVD player with component video output is non-negotiable.

DVD format continues to improve - even if it is not true HD. Many recent transfers are very impressive.
