I thought for a second that you might finally be getting an AVR receiver for 7.1 surroundFor rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

Sal, getting a real DAC?!

Steve can you just buy a Silver Bezel from the manufacturer?
I asked, they don't.

Sal
I'm still debating that one. I have no need for USB, but the output opamps are rumored to be a little better in the USB model--but, $300 more. Rory Hall of Benchmark told me it's strictly for driving long cables or strange impedance amplifiers.
I'll probably stick with the standard DAC1.
If this one doesn't sell at $725, I'll just keep it---Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
If the rear output switch is set to "Variable" then the DAC1 is an "preamp" mode. The volume would then control both headphones and amp. If you just want to hear the headphones in this scenario, you would turn the amp off.
If you set the output switch to "Calibrated" then the DAC1 is in "DAC-only" mode (fixed output), and the volume knob only controls the headphone output. Benchmark recommends you don't phutz with the adjustment pots unless you have a way of measuring output accurately. See rear panel pic in my first post.
To sum up:
Variable=DAC and preamp
Calibrated=Standalone DACSource: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
Yes, that's how I am using it now. I prefer it's sound to my MF A3CR, if that tells you anything. But keep in mind, you're limited to digital inputs only--there's no analog inputs. I have my CDP connected to Coax IN; My BluRay and DTV receiver connected to Toslink IN.
NOTE for the Techies: You can daisy-chain multiple BNC terminated digital devices (via BNC "T" connector) to the DAC1, but you have to remove the 75ohm terminator in the DAC1 (it's removable), and remember to terminate your final device. Single orders may be $$$, keep that in mind. There are things that can be done on your part to significantly reduce costs. Keep in mind, there are minimum charges that are incurred with each set-up.
