external hard drive problem

over the weekend I uninstalled all AOL/AIM software from my computer.. and everything went smooth.
The following day and now my external 500g My Book hard drive keeps being deleted from my computer. It's hooked up via USB 2.0 cable. it's been running fine for a whole year, now it or my computer is giving me fits.
I have to unplug the power cord for the hard drive to get the computer to recognize the hard drive again. If I reboot the computer it still won't recognize the external HD. this is freaking me out. I swear I didn't monkey around with anything else but removing the AOL software.

DB, go to control panel/system/USB - delete the USB tree, reboot, and let windows rebuild the USB tree, and see if you get back your USB ports.
Assuming you have XP.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
AOL is very invasive software with, as you have found out, unintended consequences following removal. Do the USB tree removal as polkatese suggested, if no worky: then use the Ext HD driver disk that it probably came with the HD, or check with the manufacuture's website if there are drivers available.

if you remove the USB tree in safe mode it may work better I think...atleast I always did that stuff in safe mode...im no techy though
