Well, saved a pair of nice 2.3's from ebay last week. The price was right ($750), and one of the local Freight carriers here had a hub near the seller, so I felt comfortable that I could finally get a pair of the big boys shipped with little or no damage.

They arrived today in great shape, still shrink-wrapped to the pallet, so I took off from work a little early and headed home for some listening. The things just sound killer, and i had a grin from ear to ear after realizing that I was finally listening to a pair of the big SDA's, but I couldn't stand to wait any longer and ripped the SL-2000's out and installed the RDO-194's (had them on hand before the speakers even showed up ;)). AHHH.... much smoother high end, and the things aren't even broken-in yet!!

I plan on listening to all of my music over the next couple of weeks, and then I will start putting together a stockpile of Sonicaps for the crossover upgrade.

Until then.....

Mike

They showed up in great shape :D

I started the opposite way, I already modified the crossovers on mine....havent gotten around to the tweeters yet...the speakers are basically in storage now until my new HT gets finished this summer.

Glad to see the shippers were kind to them. I have their bro's here ;)

Nice speakers shadow! I imagine you were pleased with the crossover upgrade? If I remember right, you used Sonicaps...

I tell you the difference in the tweeter upgrade alone is pretty staggering, I can't wait to take the next step.

    Congrats!

I like how you had the new tweeters ready and waiting.

Congratulations Mike!, I know how you feel. I'm been there a few times. And it's an awesome feeling finally hooking them up and listening to some tunes on them.

Now you can sell those SL2000's for around $150 plus shipping on ebay!

    Thanks for the words guys!

Lasareath - Good point on the 2000's, that will almost pay for my crossover upgrade.... sweet.

Yeah, I have the 194's in one of my pairs of CRS+, and the 198's in my RTA-15TL's, so I knew I was going to get them eventually... why wait? ;)

Isn't the Aragon 4004 MKII amplifier you have a dual mono design? You must have the AI-1.? Or am I just confused?

Sweet SDAs you got there. Enjoy! :D

The Aragon is a "dual mono" design, but it is also common ground, which allows it to work with the SDA's.

Awesome pair of speakers you have there. I have a pair also and love them. I recently discovered a problem with either them or my amp. Played a test record and they have an "out of phase" test. My left 2.3 happened to running out of phase. I swapped the reds and blacks and voila. There's the soundfield; there's the sounds coming from everywhere that everyone raves about. Only took 2 years to discover this but it made way more of a difference than replacing the 6 tweets. Check your phase; as the audio manfacturers sometimes make mistakes to.

Thanks for the heads up. I actually have a "phase tester" that I can hook up to the speaker and find out if its out of phase.

    Well, step 2 is complete.

Got the capacitor/resistor upgrade done yesterday to the 2.3's and took a quick listen tonight after @24-hour break in period. Gladly my expectations were met.... much tighter bass, and the high-end is so much more defined and open that It is hard to believe the difference. I actually made a buddy of mine listen to the speakers before the upgrade so he could validate my position on the difference the updated crossover made, and he just shook his head tonight after I played the first 20 seconds of "Latest Trick" from Dire straits.

I used the Clarity Caps again, after being impressed with them on my RTA-15TL's, and I tell you, they are very good sounding capacitors for the money.... they are priced somewhere between a Sonicap and a Solen, and the reviews I have read back up my impressions.

I updated with like-values on all the caps/resistors, and removed all 4 bypass capacitors and the polyswitches. The total build was $168 making at a true "no-brainer" upgrade.
