Have any of you heard this? I know there are those on this forum that can't stand this band and I, myself am not a die-hard fan of this group either. I bought it today for YYZ to test my frequency range out on me rig.

To my delight I found out that this album has some damn good stereo effects and sounds that I haven't heard before.......or at least don't remember. It's been a long time since listening to this album and I have to say that the recording is pretty damn good. Not reference, but pretty close for some of the things I use to test my rig out. I do not recall listening to this album prior to tonight with pleasure. Eh, to listen to it for music was normal. It was an album. Now I don't know whether it's my current rig that brings this album re-master out or whether it's the reissue. All I know is that I was impressed.

Speaking of YYZ, I seem to remember a long drum rif that went on for some time and it was just the drums. I could have sworn it was YYZ and this album. Was I incorrect? From what I recall, it was a song that went on for about a minute and 23 seconds and then the drummer....and only the drummer went on for a drum solo for quite a while carrying on two to three rhythms at the same time [from time to time]. The album I have (314 534 631-2) does not have the solo. You guys and gals know what I'm talking about?

Been a while since I listened to "Limelight"........

You are correct. Neil Peart is the drummer and it wasn't on every selection.

YYZ was the album right? I know it's on that but I think I'm confusing the tour.

The album I have is "Moving Pictures". It has the song "YYZ" listed as song 3 at 4 minutes and 24 seconds long, but no drum solo.

YYZ is track 3 on side one of Moving Pictures. It's one of the tracks Neil usually might bust out into a drum solo during a concert.

"The Rhythm Method" off A Show of Hands & "Different Stages" or, "O Baterista" off Rush in Rio, or "Working Man" off All the World's a Stage are all good solos from Neil. The one you are looking for is "YYZ" off Exit Stage Left, their first double live album.

I saw them live twice, and in one of those concerts, in mid drum solo....Neil had a rotating drum set and in mid drum solo, rotated, lights changed and he continued the drum solo. It was a tripping tour de force and I've yet to recover.

I saw Rush twice. It was the Signals tour and Moving Pictures. Awesome band live or stuido. I remember playing the Moving Pictures 8-track like non stop till it wore out.
I like everything from Power windows and before...old Rush.

If you want a good old school taste of Rush, listen to La Villa Strangiato on some SDAs.

    You'll see what I mean...

Hemispheres is an outstanding album that never got much respect. It's one of my favorites. I prefer the old school Rush--they lost me at "Power Windows"

I have been a Rush fanatic for many years, but have not really liked the last few albums they made, until this latest one. Snakes and Arrows is the best album they have made in a long time. The only album from the 90's I really liked was Counterparts. I'm always happy when they come out with a new album, as it is an excuse to tour, which is how Rush really needs to be appreciated, but this tour I was actually looking forward to hearing the new songs live. I was not dissapointed.

Man, what a night and day difference between the recording quality of "Moving Pictures" -vs- the remastered "Exit Stage Left". So much for using that as one of the ways to test my rig. The sound is ancient compared to most of today's recordings. You fellas were correct in that it does have the drum solo that I was looking for. Neil seemed to be real tight that night and that rendition is by far my favorite.

Another ancient recording by Rush was "Different Stages" LIVE. The post I had made on this got wiped out with the forum last week, but in a nutshell, I completely wasted my money on that one. No fidelity, echo on the bass and the crowd/music seems as if it's covered by two or three tarps. I don't know what the sound engineers were thinking on that one. They must have mixed it on a Bose rig whilst on the 'ludes or some ****. Good tunes, but daggum, you have to listen to it at low volumes in order to enjoy it. Otherwise it just sounds like a Romper Room recording, if you could imagine what that would sound like.

Went out and got Rush "Gold" as well. This one is recorded pretty good. Not quite up to par with "Moving Pictures" but definitely nothing like the other two recordings. So, I have gotten my fill of Rush for a while. If any of you are Rush fans and you don't have the two well recorded albums, you owe it to yourself to go get these two albums. Screw the other two unless you just like the particular concert and plan to listen to them in the car as they are definitely not worthy of a home rig.

Tom, I listened to my gold MoFi CD of Moving Pictures last night; I have to say it can't compare to today's recording techniques. It did have some pretty low bass in it, but overall it just came off as very compressed with little in the way of dynamic range (I guess I'm spoiled...!).

IMHO, they should release, Fly By Night, Caress of Steel, 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, and Moving Pictures on multi ch. SACD!!!:mad:
Everything after that, I don't care about. Just didn't like the direction they went in. Too...neutral to me.

Hey there, Rush fans! On the video game Rock Band this week, they released a new version of Working Man that has never been released in any format before. They are calling it the Vault Edition, and it was recorded during the same session as the version that wound up on the cd. The original master of the cd version wasn't available for the video game, so a few months ago a cover was recorded for the game. Then the guys at Harmonix were able to get their hands on this! (the guitar solo is a little choppy in spots because the person playing the game misses a few notes)

Just picked up a copy of Moving Pictures remastered CD at the local Shoprite supermarket. So far I have (or had) the 8-track, LP, red book CD, and now the remaster.
It sounds a little hot and (or loud) to me. Actually the red book version was recorded very well, and while I didn't do an A/B test yet, I think I could have saved the $6.98 :)

I'm not really sure. I have a MFSL LP of Permanent waves which I have not played yet (TT almost ready...)
Moving Pictures was recorded very well, but I'm still not sure if the remaster is better or not.
I think Power Windows was a DDD cd and sounds harsh.
I think 2112 and Hemispheres were recorded very well.

This is one of those things where feedback is welcome info.

I'm a Sabbath fan - first loves and all ;)

I did a comparison of their release Sabbath Bloody Sabbath on my rig:
    LP, CD, and remastered CD.

The remastered CD was 'hot' - everything dialed up and smashed to the limit wall. The 'regular' CD was clean but somewhat dull. My LP has seen alot of mileage so the surface noise and crackles are noticable.

I personally thought the remastered CD was more 'fatiguing' than the regular CD and LP - not sure why fans rave about remastered CDs.

Oddly, I found the LP to be the most enjoyable - the only downside is that even when running an external preamp with high gain, it couldn't match levels with the CD or remastered CD, so I couldn't get 'equity' in volume for accurate comparisons and had to drive my AVR near to its limits +5db to get that "wall of sound" necessary for the true metal experience.

Every title will be different - so the more feedback the better for the rest of us to make some informed choices.

I've got Moving Pictures on CD - haven't listened to that one for awhile - think I'll give it a fresh spin and listen to on my new rig.... enjoy the sonic goodness!! :D

H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music.

I only have three Rush LP's. A couple more are MIA. What's in your dead wax? It is said that all Rush LP's with GK (Gilbert Kong) in the dead wax sound great. Bob Ludwig mastered Moving Pictures initially on vinyl and it sounds good. Masterdisk & the initials RL appear in the dead wax. He also did Exit ... Stage Left and Signals. He is credited in the liner notes of Grace Under Pressure, but I read that RL does not appear in the dead wax of any of those LP's.

I read some of the UK stuff was iffy, but never had any to compare to. The Holland and Japenese pressings are suppose to be better/best. I should have a Holland pressing of Moving Pictures in a week or so. Working on getting a Japenese pressing.

My favorite Rush albums (in no particular order) are:

    2112
    Hemispheres
    Permanent Waves
    Moving Pictures
    Power Windows
    Counterparts
    Snakes and Arrows

I could listen to any of their albums for the most part, though I have never been a huge fan of the first album or Caress of Steel.
