Tweeter question...

Hi All,

So, I have a pair of SDA CRS. They only have one tweeter. I believe it's the SL 2000? Well, I love the speakers, but I'm not nutty for this tweeter.

I also have a pair of Monitor 5s. They have what I am almost sure is a Peerless ring dome tweeter. I love this tweeter.

So, my question is, can I put the Peerless tweeter in the CRSs, and are my observations consistent with other's experiences? I've run across this Peerless tweeter in different configurations many times and always like it. I can't say I hate the Polk tweeter, but I just don't like it as much. It can be a little harsh.

Thanks,

Ed

Well, someone sent me a PM and I thought it only polite to respond. I'm pretty sure I'm not an automated spam machine. Hang on, let me check.

    Nope, I'm not.

    Take care,

LOL....ok, but I'm sure they would have figured it out. By any chance, was it CL35?

If you have the SL2000 Polk makes a replacement that is much smoother and doesn't have that harshness you speak of. I had SL2000's and hated them. The replacement is a hugely better tweeter The part number for the tweeter is RDO-194. I believe they are 48.00 from polk and if you tell them you are a member shipping is free and fast.

Yup, that's it. The Peerless, although popular, is not the replacement for the SL2000, so go with the RDO.

The peerless is popular and was in many of the earlier generation of Polk Monitors. Most x-over schematics I have seen where both Models of the same speaker use a peerless and then the later sl1000 or sl2000 have different components.

The peerless would not be a drop in and play type tweeter for your CRS's. Polk makes a replacement silk dome tweeter for the sl2000 which is much smoother and close to the peerless sound. The model # is RD0194-1 and if you call Polk customer service and tell them you are a club member you can get a discount.

Last time I checked a pair was $102 shipped with free 2 day FedEx. If you like the sound of the peerless the RD0's are close and much better, IMO,(and most other members opinion) than the aging sl2000.

I'll go one step further and suggest to Ed that he consider doing the 4.1TL upgrade to his CRS+.

Agreed, whatever CL35 suggested to you, ignore it completely.

Here is a link to the upgrade. It is called the 4.1tl upgrade but on this post it is called the SL3000 mod.

It's what the next generation CRS model was going to be before Polk pulled the plug on the entire SDA line.

It has a x-over modification which further tweaks the CRS+'s sound. Because of this slight factory x-over modification it allows you to use the RD0198-1 replacement tweeter and the overall presentation of the CRS+'s is improved. Polk posted the x-over here, it never made it into production:

P.s. This mod cannot be used with the sl2000 tweeter in place.
