New Maserati A8 GCS Berlinetta. Masers have always been alot of business in a pretty package but this car just has some gorgeous lines! Dig those wire wheels too! I want one!

The whole story and more pictures.
Since the news broke that Maserati was planning a new sportscar to rival the benchmark Porsche 911, Italian styling houses have been lining up to pitch their designs for how they think the new Trident sportscar should look. Following the Chicane concept unveiled in Geneva by the students of the Instituto Europeo di Design, the resuscitated Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera threw its hat into the ring this weekend with the A8 GCS concept you see above.

Together with Touring's other Maserati concept, the Quattroporte-based Bellagio Fastback, the A8 GCS design study was unveiled at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, the annual Mecca of class and performance on the shores of trendy Lake Como in Italy. Inspired by Pininfarina's iconic Maserati A6 GCS Berlinetta of 1954, the Touring concept presents a compelling mix of modern design and retro touches. While it's hard to make the case that, with even the most well-established outfits struggling to get by, the industry really needs another Italian design house or coachbuilder, if these are the results then we can hardly complain. Check out the images in the gallery below to see what we mean.

I was in a maserati a couple years ago and I have to say it was the nicest car I have seen. It had tan leather with navy blue pipeing, all hand stitched leather interior, the top was down and all I could think of was how bad it would be if a bird **** on the interior.

Don't know about performance but fit and finish was top notch for sure.

Sweet ride....looks just like a Nurse shark from the front. This article was hoping it could come in around the priceline of a Porsche 911 ( Still really high by any standards , but within reach of mere mortals ) .

I normally cant stand wire spoke rims ( Think tennis shoe tired lowrider here in CA ) but for some reason they work really well on this sexy little tart. :D

Beautiful lines. Those wheels need to go though.

I have liked the new Masserati look but the grill/fog lights ain't doin it for me so much on this one. Agree the faux spoke wheels don't help either.

The new Maserati's are very very nice. Basically an extension of Ferrari since Ferrari bought them. I think the union has been great for both marques. I hope Maserati makes a big comeback in the states. I have great love for Porsche but they are becoming too popular and have lost some of their exclusivity. While there are many versions of the 911, the average motorist can't tell the difference between a basic 911 and a 911 Turbo. Not that I feel one should buy an expensive automobile just "to be seen" in. The extra $30-35K for a 911 Turbo should make it stand out more than a run of the mill 911.

    The spoked wheels aren't fake.

That's a gigantic brake rotor and what looks like at least a 4 piston caliper right there. Nothing else behind those spokes. They are for real.

I will correct my 1st post. Maserati is owned by the FIAT conglomerate. Ferrari and Maserati still share many many parts and engineering since FIAT also owns Ferrari.

Maserati has benefited from this by the trickle down of Ferrari bits.

Actually Doug FIAT was one of the original Italian marques and has a very long racing history. Most of their attempts in the USA were flops. Ferrari has always had a close relationship with FIAT group. I'm sure many were saying the same thing you were when they found out VAG (VW/Audi Group) bought Bugatti and Lamborghini.

Once Enzo died the logical move was to let the FIAT group acquire a stake in Ferrari. They use many of the same coachbuilders and while there isn't a lot of engine x-over they use the same engineers, etc.

When FIAT brought the 124 Spider to the USA the dohc engine in the FIAT was designed by ex-Ferrari chief engineer Aurelio Lampredi. Many of the six cylinder Ferrari engines were FIAT based the most famous being the engine in the 246 DINO named in honor of Enzo's son who died. Enzo never believed it should have been called a "true" Ferrari because all Ferrari's had 12 cylinder engines. So no Ferrari badge originally on the 246 DINO. (2.4 liter V6=246)

They have had as close a relationship as Volkswagen and Audi.

Fiat S.p.A., is an Italian automobile manufacturer, engine manufacturer, financial and industrial group based in Turin, Northern Italy. Founded in 1899 by a group of investors including Giovanni Agnelli, the company name FIAT is an acronym for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (Italian Automobile Factory of Turin)

You also have to remember that FIAT is like the Italian Honda. They make cars but they also make tractors (New Holland), heavy equipment (CASE), commercial vehicles (Iveso, Sedden-Atkinson), power generation systems (CASE), airplane engines and so on and so forth. They even make motorcycles (Vespa) too. Unlike Honda though, they don't slap FIAT all over everything. Also, unlike Honda, they are a gigantic financial institution and industrial manufacturer for all sectors from private commercial to military contracting. FIAT is a big deal in Europe and they have a long history of racing like what was already said but they also have a long history of working with tuners like Abarth and Lancia (which they own both) and designers like the ones mentioned in the article and also Pininfarina, Italdesign and Zagato.

    Just some more reference.
