Can you use rear surrounds for 5.1???

I originally thought 5.1 surround meant 3 channels front (R,C,L) and 2 channels rear (L & R). I now realize the surrounds should be mounted to the sides.

Has anyone ever attempted to mount the surrounds behind the listener in a 5.1 scenario?

Thanks,
David

I have mine mounted that way because of the way my living/dining room is set up. In my case it helps to have my surrounds pointed outward a bit. Not the best but you still get some of the "surround" effect.

EDIT: Still hooked up the the normal 4&5 channel of course.

I had a 5.1 channel like that, with the two surrounds behind the listening position. It can be done. You'll hear things differently than they are intended to be heard...but when you hear a shot coming from your back, you really won't know it was intended to be heard at your left/right.
