Upgrade or not to upgrade.
I recently purchased the Onkyo TX-SR605. I am using Sony speakers (the model numbers start with SS and they can still be found on the BestBuy web site) which I purchased from Best Buy about 5 years ago. I am thinking about upgrading the floorstanding, center, surround speakers and possibly the sub, but unfortunately I don't have thousands to spend on some really nice speakers. My budget is around $700-$900.
My family room is 13'x18'. I was thinking of getting a 2 sets of polk bookshelf speakers to replace my floorstanding and surround speakers (my son will be walking soon and I want to have smaller speakers that I can put out of his reach). Would 4 bookshelf speakers work well with the size of my room? I was also thinking that I would keep my Sony sub (to cut down on cost) but would that mesh well with the polk speakers?
Please let me know weather you think I should stick with my (blah) Sony speakers or would I be able to get some nice polk speakers in my price range where I could definitely tell a difference. If so, what models would you recommend? Also, is it ok to mix and match models, or should I stay with the same model?

I would look at some used RT series speakers for the fronts and a different sub.You could probably get away with leaving the sony's in surround duty untill you can afford some polks.Keep an eye out in our for sale section or your local craigs list, you don't want shipping charges to eat up alot of your budget.HT SYSTEM-

Welcome to the forum. Will the speakers be on stands. I have a 2 year old that never touches my huge towers. Hmmm.....Time to take a trip to listen to some good polks. Depends on where you live and what's near by. Let us know where you can go and many of us will tell you from there. That's a good size budget if you know where to look.Retired Onkyo 520 (returned broken HK 247)

Thanks for the Welcome. I was thinking of putting the bookshelf speakers on my entertainment stand. It will fit a 60" TV and I currently have a 50" so there is about 5" inches on each side of the TV. With the limited space I have, I was looking at some of the thinner (width) speakers.
Im curious if you lucked out and you have a well behaved child, or if kids in general wont touch or knock over floorstanding speakers. If that is the case, should I be looking at floorstanding speakers.
I was also wondering if you get more bang for the buck with floorstanding speakers.
Oh yeah, I live in Salt Lake City, so it looks like Circuit City or RC Willey would be the place for me to look at.
