Demoed a Velodyne SPL-1000R today

After leaving my doctor's office today, I decided to stop in to a local hi-fi shop to see what they had to offer.

After walking around for a bit, I found their (what they called)high end room. I sat down and watched their demo DVD for a bit through some medium grade Paradigms. I was far from impressed. Then I listened to some KEF iQ9's. Other than the highs being a little veiled, they sounded pretty nice. Warm, decent bottom end, with pretty good imaging. I'm sure a more optimum setup such as a external amp and some decent cable would have done them some justice.

Lastly, I demoed some subs. A Deftech model that I told them to shut off after only a few seconds. Then the Sunfire Jr., which didn't sound bad, but left me wanting more. Lastly, they put on a Velodyne SPL-1000R, definitely the most musical sub I've heard so far. Tight and clean would be the best way to describe it. I definitely wouldn't mind using it with my Magnepans, or even with my Tannoy's for a little extra bottom end. The only problem I could see would be using it for home theater. My listening room is on a slab and is partially open to my kitchen. I'm not sure if it could fill a 16x26x8' space. They offered me a pretty good price and 0% APR and 0 payment financing for one year. I hope I'm not tempted to drop in there again next week after seeing the doctor again.

Yet another example of the medical conditions in this country driving people into bankruptcy.

I bet you will have to pay full price when they discover Velodyne is not covered in your HMO.....

I use this sub in my theater and I can't turn it all the way up. My theater is about the size of the area you mentioned. That sub has a 1000watt amp. It might not have even been turned up...It also has the remote so that you can tailor the sound to your room. I love my SPL.

What you heard doesn't suprise me at all. I recently purchased an SPL-1200R to mate with my AAD 2001 monitors for two channel listening. Well, I must say that it's by far the best upgrade I've done to date. If you think your speakers sounded good before wait till you release them from trying to reproduce the bass notes. These poor guys that think that they have "full range" speakers are absolutely in denial.

When I started out I also had an SVS 25-31plus cylinder sub for HT duty. Guess what...the SVS has since been sold. This velo is really that good. Extremely fast, musical & it redefines the term "seemless integration" This baby fits my system like a glove.

My room is 13x32x7 (approx 3000cu ft) & the velo can shake the pictures when called on in HT duty & then turn around & pull off the music end like I've never heard before. I am so impressed with the velo that I might even consider another one for a stereo sub set-up.

If I was you I would consider the SPL-1200R due to your room size.

Sounds like you stopped in at Audio Den?

You do NOT need another sub, BTW. :D
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

He's heard the sub I currently have in my rig, that's all. ;)

Harry, it was 6th ave, not Audio Den. I'm scared to set foot in there, I'd really get myself in trouble. :D

Nice grab. Did you bring it home already, or are they delivering it? I'll plan my pickup of the cables when you have it hooked up.

Yeah, I'm just being a 'breaker, that's all.

Who's going to listen to sub advice from someone who didn't think a PSW450 to an SVS would be much of an upgrade, anyway ;) ?

Gotcha! Hey, I just went from an SVS to the Velo. A nice upgrade to say the least.

Did you get a chance to compare the SPL with a DD sub while you were in store?

Well, it appears my Elemental Design's amp went again. Maybe it's a sign.

I spoke to eD, they're doing the right thing and sending out a replacement today. So it looks like I'll be sticking with the eD for a little while.

Plus I'd rather not spend $$$$ on a new sub yet.

    A few.

But as long as they take care of me right away, I'll stick with them. Honestly, I'm surprised they haven't changed suppliers yet.
