Rush for the first time

Granted, I've been listening to Rush for over 25 years and seen them in concert 5 times but tonight was a new experience for me. My setup has finally afforded me the chance to not just hear Rush but to actually "feel" the music. I am amazed at all the nuances of the music I've been missing.

The SDA's and the Dodd pre are amazing as far as the clarity and seperation. It's like Geddy,Alex and Neil are right in front of me jamming away. It really is like hearing them for the first time.

I've listened to Doug's Maggies, Aaron's Lsi15's and Brock's SDA's but you really don't get a total appreciation until you can sit back with a brew and enjoy your own.

A few months ago I was involved in a thread about the Rti8's and some newbs and myself were just gushing over them. Don't get me wrong, I love my 8's but they are no match for SDA's.

The one thing I remember most is Doro chiming in that basically we didn't know any better.

Well, now I do.

I'm also 25+ years a fan of Rush, probably seen them 8 or 9 times, as recently as last year. I've also had SDA's for a lot of years, but I still remember the first time I heard 2112 on them and I was floored.

One suggestion for you - check out the Mobile Fidelity remasters. They just released Permanent Waves a few months ago, it's still in press so you can get it in the $25 range. It's fantastic, a deaf person could tell the difference between this pressing vs. the original cd. I've got all the MFSL Rush titles (2112, Moving Pictures, Signal, plus the Permanent Waves). They'll blow you away, they're so well done.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

They CARE about the recording. Rush doesn't let the execs interfere with their process, THEY call the shots.

The MFSL remasters are taken from the masters, with an audiophile in mind. Night and day...

I don't really know anything they do. When they were popular I was listening to Classical and Soundtracks. I was a very strange child.

I bought a couple of regular LP pressings of Rush and was lees than thrilled with the sound quality. Very flat and just did not have the dynamics I thought they should. I will look into getting the mobile fidelity remasters.

My advice to anyone curious about Rush is to start with Moving Pictures and 2112. Then you'll be hooked....

I've been looking for both 2112 & Moving Pictures in those remastered MFSL's but I've seen some of them go for well over $100...

    Dave,

What Rush were you listening to? The one thing SDA's do better than any other speaker I've heard is LIVE music. When recorded well live music is phenomenal on the SDA's. Some of my most startling listening sessions have been with live recordings.

There are very few all purpose speakers than can match the SDA's, IMO.

I agree with the MFSL disks. But some of the Rush studio stuff is not recorded very well. Some of the live disc's leave one wanting also. I have generally been disappointed with much of the later Rush cd's as the production quality could have been better.

    Caress of Steel
    Permanent Waves
    2112
remaster of All The World's A Stage
Different Stages is a very spotty live recording as I can always tell when they switch venues (since it's a compilation from several shows). Disc 3 from the Odeon isn't too bad a recording.

all come to mind when I think of good recordings.

Rush in RIO is terrible and Snakes and Arrows is just blah as far as the recording goes.

I'm always surprised as to how mediocre some of the recordings are when Rush is such a technical and perfection oriented band.

"A Farewell to Kings" is one of their best, IMO. I also like "Moving Pictures" and "Hemispheres." I've been a fan since their beginning, Rush rocks.

I give them a pass on the recording quality on Rush In Rio. Get hold of the dvd and watch the documentary material, and you'll understand why the sound quality sucks. They had a horrible trip to Rio, and it was pouring rain when they arrived. They had no sound check, and just about every circumstance was going against them that night.

The R30 dvd is much better.

I quite like Different Stages. I saw them on that tour. That was '96 - the 20 year anniversary of 2112. They did it start to finish. Killier....

No excuse for poor quality recording, IMO (Rush in Rio and I have the DVD). R30 is better and Different Stages is a pretty average recording. I hate "cut and paste" jobs for a live performance. Every time I listen I can tell when the venue changes because the sound quality is slightly different.

You know, you do bring up a very interesting point. I never understood why bands do these compilation live albums. I've seen Rush multiple times on the same tour. They play the same set every night. Why not just put out a whole show start to finish? I just don't get that...

I never got it either.......some bands that didn't intend to put out a live album have pieced things together with great success many many years later. But for Rush, who is one of my favorite bands, their live albums just aren't that well put together and the recording can be spotty. Still good but not great considering what perfectionists they are.

I realize they just put out a Snakes and Arrows live disc. I also realize not every live Rush disc is a compilation from several concerts. I will pick up Snakes and Arrow Live-eventually.

I saw the S&A tour at Madison Square Garden. I really appreciated them doing Passage to Bangkok. That's been a favorite of mine for 25 years, and I'd never heard them do it live. It was a great show! I'm gonna have to get that album...
